Default Speedbox?

I was over at Audiocircle and someone told me a nice addition to my table would be a Pro-ject speedbox. They said it can make a really nice difference. I know proper rotation can be key, but would my TT be that off?

Reason I ask is because Im getting a cartridge this week and I planned on getting the Grado Sonata 1. Well If the speedbox really does make that big of difference I would not have the funds for it. Would going with something like the Grado Platinum 1 and Pro-ject speedbox yield better results than just going with the Sonata 1?

Speedbox is mandatory for Pro-Ject and Music Hall tables. You can do without one if you have too. However with the money you spent on that 9.1 it's in your best interest to have one in order to fully take advantage of what that table is capable of.

Read over what I wrote it sounded like I was contradicting myself, if you want your table to sound its best, you need the speedbox. If it's not something you can afford at the moment, you can get by without it.

I'm sure you understood what I meant though.

Hi bigred!

In discussion with a dealer about my intention of adding the Wave Mechanic Power supply, which also includes the ability to adjust speed to its proper rotation, I was told that unit would cost too much to make it worth my while. The unit in question is $1,500 and he suggested instead the Pro-ject Speedbox II SE. At Approximately $700 in Canada this would make more sense and he rated the Pro-ject very highly.

He also indicated very clearly that such a unit can have a profoundly positive effect on the sound, and he recommended that I consider getting one...even if that were only a little down the road. For my TT, which has the Rega RB250 tonearm he suggested that an upgrade from OriginLive and their OL1 Rega upgrade or the OL Silver would be a better investment. It is my plan to have this done by June (going with the OL Silver toneram).

We didn't discuss cartridge upgrades or the scenario you described, but here is my thought on the matter. The Grado Reference SONATA is far superior the the Grado Reference PLATINUM. Please don't misinterpret that as the PLATINUM being an inferior catridge, because it's not. However, in your case, and unless you want to upgrade from the entry-level Pro-ject Speedbox, I would upgrade to the Grado Reference SONATA first.

You have beautiful TT in the Pro-ject RM9.1 and the SONATA would really bring it to life more than the PLATINUM could.

Great write-up John. Yeah I placed an order for the Sonata 1 and I will just save up for the speedbox since it seems unanimous that it helps take a step up in performance. Thanks!

P.S.- What cartridge are you going with now?

Hey buddy!

Thanks for the kind comment on the write-up! I am still using the Grado Reference Platinum, but I plan on upgrading after I have the OL Silver installed. I would really to experiment with an MC cartridge, but need to do more research.

At some point I'll be upgrading to the Michell Never Connected power supply that goes for about $895 US. I understand that it does make a substantial difference to the clarity and resolution of the music. I just have a few other upgrades that are higher in the order of importance.

Hi Fred,

The new ARC PH5 is breaking in great, it sounds better and better every day. I really enjoy the warmth sound of the tubes.

Did you receive the Grado Reference Sonata yet? Would love to hear your impressions of this outstanding cartridge!

John

PS~ I sold my other Grado Reference Platinum to CasualKiller a few weeks back, and he told me he loves it.

Hmm, You told yourself he loves it?

Good question though, I'd like to know if he got it yet too. His gallery isn't updated yet (which is mandatory here as you well know!)

Will update Sunday, been very busy at work. The cartridge is amazing, I'm loving it. Setup now is the MMF 5.1, Grado Platinum Reference, Graham Slee 2 SE phono pre and Speedbox II. Was just at our local dealers yesterday that sold me all my speakers and my Marantz SR8002 and we are looking at bringing in a Creek Destiny integrated to finish off my setup.

He also offered me a pair of Monitor Audio Platinum PL-100 speakers from his personal stock for a ridiculous price but I won't get to into that, we are still just "discussing" them.

Hi John,

In the last few weeks I did pick up a few lp's. Hendrix's Axiss and Are You Experienced (both reissues) and The Doors Morrison Hotel (also reissue) I'm planning on picking up Zeppelin's Mothership box set today. (I finally caved). But the REALLY big news is that the mint condition Genesis Live LP that I bought off ebay nearly two months ago FINALLY arrived this past week. The USPS' BS about media mail being a 2 to 9 day service is a total fraud! The ebay seller shipped the lp promptly (and packaged it very well) but the post office parked it on the side of the road in some truck and left it there for nearly 6 freaking weeks! That album is amazing. And I've really enjoyed listening to it after work the past few days.

What about you? What have you been up to?

Hey Joe! Good to see you online again, and real happy that you love the cartridge. You alwasy worry when selling something and hope the person that buys it likes it as well. Glad I don't have to worry about that now! LOL!

6 weeks? That's freagin' insane! Glad you received though and in good condition as well. Even nicer to hear that the LP set is all you expected it to be. I love when a plan comes together like that!

Have been keeping a low profile re purchases of vinyl and/or BD's, but I must admit that the Jose Feliciano- Feliciano LP is uber-fantastic. I wish they would re-release his breakthough SOULED LP, which I have a copy of. Unfortunately, it is one that got damaged some time ago and I don't play it any longer as a result.
