Default Old Nintendo system sells for $13,105

Old Nintendo system sells for $13,105

Quote:

Don't get rid of your PS3 discs just yet...

Everyday folk discovering colossally valuable collectors' items amid everyday junk has been the lifeblood of antiques shows for years, but it's not every day you see a real-life gold-in-the-attic tale play out on eBay.
Last week, North Carolina eBay user lace_thongs35 thought she was putting up an everyday, 80s-era Nintendo Entertainment System (together with five games) up on the popular auction site. But less than an hour after the first bid, the price was over $6,000 -- and on Wednesday, when the auction closed, the final selling price topped $13,000.
Why? Not the console itself, but one of the games bundled with it -- a deeply obscure 1987 release called Stadium Events, a highly sought-after collectors' item. But it wasn't even the game itself that was worth the bulk of the money -- it was the original cardboard box, which collectors value at a breathtaking $10,000. Fewer than 10 complete copies of the game are thought to exist, and retro gaming aficionados consider it one of the hardest-to-find NES games ever made.
Bet you're wishing you hadn't let Mom throw out your Nintendo collection now, eh?

Please wait

Is this the game where you ran on a mat to play? I think my cousin has/had it.

I may see if he wants to sell it. E-Bay here I come.

I really hate the idea of games as collectors items lol, trying to track down some old games recently for nostalgic reasons i am finding out just how crazy some of the prices are for old games.

I believe I played this back in the day. I don't remember it being fun at all; in fact I don't remember any of the pseudo "you're really playing" games being any good at all until the Wii came around and blew that genre up.

EDIT: I am fairly certain — due particularly to the low numbers of Stadium Event carts released — that I actually played "World Class Track Meet" which according to Wikipedia, is "identical in gameplay and content, except for title changes within the game to reflect the new name."

This is crazy. When I first heard about it, I started making plans to post my old console on Ebay tomorrow. Imagine my disappointment when I read it was that one game that was the driving force behind the high price.

I hear ya. Yeah, this news story has been on many different websites, and a lot of them have misleading titles, like "Old Nintendo sells for $13,000," when obviously the console isn't the reason it went for that.

Theres actually another bid for this game on ebay right now , but its an actual sealed unopened version NTSC format. Some seller from Kansas saw the game was worth a lot , went to look at his well kept collection of nes games in his basement to see if he had it and found he had a sealed version of this rarest of rare games. The reason it was sealed was he bought it then afterword noticed it was to be used with the speacial floor pad that had prettymuch been pulled of the market. So he just never bothered opening it or returning it. Chances are this is the last sealed NTSC copy of this game , last I saw it was going for over $17,000 with over 7 days still left to bid. My guess is it will end up selling for at least $30,000. And that might be a conservative guess on my part man I wish I had found acopy of this game back in the early 90's

To each his own if someone spends $41k on a piece of plastic, but why not do something more interesting yet just as stupid with that kind of money, like: buy a mountain of snow, a M-16 and rent a hotel room (with hookers saying 'ello to your little friend) in Vegas so you can re-enact the last 15 minutes of Scarface?

I know this is one of the rarest NES games, but I know it has never commanded this kind of money. Did the seller actually get paid, or were some nerds having fun bidding it up?
