My set up is like so........
Onkyo HTR-667 (about a year old) Directv DVR (3 years old) Samsung BD-P-1600 (brand new) Samsung PN50B550 (brand new) I'm am running things via HDMI 3.1 connections through the reciever the same that I used when I had the Magnavox BD-player (Wally World store bought) hooked to it since the beginning on 2009. Now that I have the new 1600 it seems to get the "no signal" bit from time to time when I want to watch a Blu. I've double checked the input source on the reciever and it is set to HDMI 1 (DVD) and the TV is also set to HDMI. I have no problems switching to DTV. Sometimes it seems as if the BD player needs to warm up for about 30 min before it will connect the signal. I've just ordered from monoprice some new HDMI 3.1a catagory 2 cables for all three units to see if this will fix my problem. I did get a new HDMI cable w/ the player. and I've tried switching to a different HDMI port w/ the same results. Why would the old maganvox player work and the sammy not. Kinda odd. Now if I set reset on the BD-player, it will connect as well. But then I have to go in and reset the factory settings to enjoy the movies audio feeds. any tips on what I may be doing wrong or could my receiver be on the frits? would seem odd since DTV works fine or could I have a bad BD player... any suggestions to help work out this frustration.... thanks guys & gals |

Why do you need to change the audio settings after a reset? Your Sammy & Onkyo each support both LPCM & bitstreaming, so you should get HD audio either way. And as a rule Sammys are among the few SAs that will properly mix secondary audio with lossless primary audio in LPCM mode without downshifting primary. (While the PS3 will mix them properly, most SAs force the primary audio down to DD/DTS; bitstreaming generally blocks secondary audio altogether.)
Your DTV box won't send anything better than DD (or possibly DD+) to your AVR; all broadcasters use DD for surround sound. I suspect your el-cheapo Magnavox did much the same thing; many early players will downgrade any TrueHD and/or DTS-HD MA soundtrack to DD/DTS. I don't know if that's your problem, but the fact that (a) your Sammy connects after resetting to factory defaults and (b) you're overriding the factory audio settings suggests it COULD be an audio problem. (But then it could be a bad receiver or player too.) |
