Default Repetitive Topics issue.

Hey,

I don't intend to offend nor undermine other members of starting threads about movies. My main issue is about the repetitive threads over and over, such as discussions about Avatar, Star Wars, Batman and the list goes on...

I would like to see an upcoming theatrical releases/movies in a sub forum on it own rather than have it raided with the above. Sure people like to discuss things but I (and I am sure others feel the same way) would rather check on the movie's news instead of (I hate Avatar, I hate Batman, which is better, which is worst and the list continues).

So for example: is it possible to have Theatrical releases/upcoming films Sub Forum and having a movie discussion sub forum as well.

Now I am not talking about every time a movie leaves theaters should be moved to the right subforum. I am talking about theatrical releases sub forum (being a section by itself) against Movie discussion (by itself and where others have the freedom of discussing their opinions about the movie).

Any thoughts about this?

I think that by dividing into too many sub-forums it diminishes traffic (look at the amount of posting that currently happens (or lack of) in the Hollywood/Celebrities and the Movie Polls forums.

Their are a lot of Star Wars and Avatar discussions going on right now, but those will die down. As we hit the Summer Blockbuster season there will be a lot of traffic in the review threads for new movies.

I'd love to hear what others think, and meanwhile we'll do our best to keep merging threads when it applies to keep things organized.

I say just have them merged. Remember back when there was like a whole page of Transformers 2 threads back when it came out? It was freakin' ridiculous. I say to have them all merged up and be done with it.

My issue is not just about merging.

The summer is coming up and soon we will have to deal with (I hate Iron Man 2, Iron Man 2 Vs. Batman TDK, or even Iron Man 2 Vs. Avatar) = more works for the MODs to clean = repetitive discussions.

Its much more convenient/less hassling to have a sub forum for such threads.

Even if you don't agree about what I stated above, then wouldn't it be better to have a sub forum only for upcoming movie's news.

Its a tough call on those, most of which you mentioned were created in Blu-ray movies forum and moved to movie discussion. You can merge them but then you get the avid fans and the haters in one thread and its usually chaos.

Technically all movies start in pre-production and go to theater so its alot of moving around when it generally happens fast(from announcement to DVD)
The best action if size bothers ya I think, is to have the Announced threads...Let them run their course of action, then close, with link to the now in theater thread and so on.

My opinion though and based on a discussion I had previously, You are getting alot of activity from Avatar, either hate or love for the film, members wanting to compare it to other successful films, etc. It will die down eventually. Avatar is KING OF THE WORLD!! right now, no denying that

Maybe expand the role of the movie polls forum to comparisons as well? That's basically what the polls ask anyhow

These new threads will get started and die off if there's no interest in the discussion then they'll die quickly. If it fosters more traffic then that's great, because the more people visiting the movie forums, the more chance they'll participate in other threads as well.

Exactly. Eventually the Who Hates Avatar thread will get merged in the Avatar thread (after the fervor dies down) but if it were to be merged know it would turn into something similar to whats going on in the Nightmare on Elm St thread now. As of now there's a thread for the supporters and another for the haters.

Again, perfectly stated. Anytime a major event/geek movie comes out, this is bound to happen. It usually happens 3 or 4 times during the summer and 1 or 2 times during the winter season. It's fun to see people be passionate about movies

LOL, I can't say there haven't been more than a couple of threads started the last few days that I've been tempted to add a poll to and move it there myself

On that I agree.

Don't get me wrong, I love, work, and in the business as well with movies.

My issue is that discussions in the movie sections tends to be very similar; its either you see: I love/hate/compare/just saw; and the list goes on.

This gives you guys more work to do, just to clean up/merge and more.

Having a specific Sub forum (IMO) leads to a much controlled environment. Plus it leaves a concentrated amount of views to the topics (If you want to hear news about movie then go to this section).

I think they need to leave it alone, seems to be working the way it's being done. Popular movies mean lots of discussion and more hits for the site, makes sense some movies would have more than one topic. Forums aren't about making 1 or 2 people, it's about trying to make everyone happy and in this case, I think it works the way it is.

That just seems like the natural order of things in the way I view the world (ex: politics, religion, society, etc.), so I would tend to agree with that notion. However, the Internet is a very different place, especially forums.

On the one hand, it has been expresed that merging the "Avatar: best muvy evah!" thread with "Avatar: stoopidest film in da wurldd!" thread might cause hostility. On the other, having fifty-thousand Avatar threads is a bit annoying.

I'm wondering if there can't be some way to stack threads into a movie category. Like so:
Avatar
-Blu-ray Release
-Avatar Discussion
-Avatar vs Dark Knight

I suppose that would take up more room and serious change to the site.

Knowing me. I don't really debate about movies. It's not my thing. Anyway, it would probably help if there's a sub forum, but then again is it really necessary?
There's always going to be new threads created about the same movie and topic, and it gets annoying at times just to keep up when the new thread gets merged in with the existing thread.

I'm all for anything to make this site better, and more enjoyable so I'm 50/50 for this one.

There's already too many subforums in my opinion, and I rarely check any of them. After the changes, I just stopped going into the forums like Movie Polls, Hollywood Actresses, etc. I did appreciate how it cleaned up certain forums by removing the endless poll threads.

I know Stewie, but still. There still should be one thread for each movie or series. I think that in these threads we should be able to debate, granted, not debating like Iron Man Vs Avatar. Those threads should be defaulted to polls because it's essentially, in a way, asking which film is better.

I trust the movie forum mods here to handle it properly. Even though some people don't like them.

Comparative issues are my main issue in this case.

Starting a thread about one movie vs. another, equals polling to me.

I don't mean to disrespect other members desire to discuss or even debate a movie against another (I don't mind it but its clogging up the subforum). Its just way out of control when I (and surely others) just frequent the movie discussion forum to hear about upcoming news.

I would support the idea of the MOVIE POLLS section being broadened to MOVIE POLLS AND COMPARISONS section (maybe someone can come up with a better name )

That way the main Movie discussion section would be just that, not movie comparison threads or movie poll threads

That said though, the current format of the section is fine imo and the change isn't really necessary (again imo) because at some point you over divide the sections and make it too much of a hassle to find exactly where you should start your new thread (and the mods have to figure out where to move inappropriately placed threads). It just becomes a headache for everyone

Like JW and GS have said, when the heat dies down in the threads, they will be merged into the main one.

Now when they are just your ordinary repetitive ones (like when someone starts a new thread for one piece of news about a film or starts one just to say they saw it and give their review), I find the mods in the section do a great job of merging when necessary.

If you see one that they didn't catch (they can't be everywhere, all the time) just hit the button and include a link to the main thread so that the mods can very easily merge the two

I do that all the time
