Default Charade (1963)

One of my favorite films! Anybody know anything, have a guess on when, or have any thoughts about this coming out on blu-ray?

It's in the public domain. Anyone (including Criterion) can release it.

I have not watched Jailhouse Rock yet (it is in glorious black ad white).

Tonight I hope to watch Transformers 2 - the Walmart IMAX edition.
What do Elvis and Transformers have to do with this thread?

Charade is still in the public domain, AFAIK, but that doesn't mean that Criterion didn't license the rights from Universal. Look at the back of the Criterion DVD, and you'll see that they released it under license from Universal.

Presumably, licensing it from Universal gave them access to whatever prints and source material Universal has in its film vaults.

Yes, they most likely used Universal's film elements for the transfer.

But it's still public domain, so any other company could put it out first if they wanted to.

It was public domain when Criterion cleaned their print up (like they did with "39 Steps" and "My Man Godfrey), and they at least stamped some claim (NPI ) on their studio restoration version--

Universal released a copy in a 2-disk with "The Truth About Charlie", but that may have just been because it was cheap to get hands on--Don't think they did any copyrightable studio work on the original, but not sure.
(And hey, wait...Was "Duplicity" a remake too, and they didn't tell us? )

Universal originally produced Charade in the 60s, that is why they included it on DVD with their own remake a few years back.

Yeah, thought the poster meant "Did that mean that Universal re-asserted copyright ownership on the disk after Criterion's version?"
I suspect not, but can't help anyone with that question.

Oh, then the answer is no. They simply have the best elements available since it's their film.

It's still in the public domain, Universal cannot regain copyright. They can, however, charge companies to access their physical film elements and negatives of Charade since they own them.

Not to be the forum police, but this belongs in the Wishlist thread and/or should have a question mark in the title probably.

Put simply, it's very unlikely (not not impossible) that a company other than Universal or Criterion released it on blu-ray in a version that was really worth watching - that looked every bit as good as most folks would like it to.

Chances are, they are already planning on it....

What a great idea! I have always loved that movie... There is something about it, I can't put my finger on it, but there is something charming about Charade, one of those things: you can't describe it, but you know it's there...

https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Charade-Blu-ray/12775/

Coming out in a week or so.

Does anyone know if this will be a new transfer?

I have the Criterion DVD that was issued in 2007.

I noted that the DVD print is pretty dirty during the first few minutes but seems to clean up a bit later on.

Hope there is a review of this title online soon.

Audrey Hepburn is Charade's "je ne sais qoui."

This movie came to me as quite a surprise! Stanley Donen's take on Hitchcock's style succeeds on many levels. Cary Grant is our common thread to Hitch, but Audrey Hepburn steals every scene she is in. Together they work off each other to create an infectious caper. Charade should be added to every serious Blu-Ray movie lover's collection.

Hopefully we may see more of Audrey in the near future - hint.. hint...

Breakfast at Tiffany's and My Fair Lady are begging to be restored for Blu-Ray release.

Charade has been referred to on many occasions as "The Best Hitchcock Movie Hitchcock never made". Just google that phrase and you will see what I mean.

I bought the DVD of "Truth About Charlie" when it came out just for a clean DVD copy of Charade (previous versions have been awful). I really hope restoration has been done for the Blu Ray because I will pick it up.
