I have a bunch of titles on my wish list that I was going to buy soon, but they jumped in price literally over night. For example, The Godfather Collection went from $49.99 to $65.99 and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly went from $11.99 to $17.99. There are several other titles that went up as well like that. This is why I usually jump on the good deals when I see them but I was waiting to buy a whole bunch at once this time. Anyone know the cause for the price increases?

Just how it is with any kind of B&M store, website, and so on prices go up and prices go down at anytime. They can't just simply stay at 1 price or just keep going down in price because sometimes they will need to go up in price probably depending on how many copies of it they have in stock and how well it's selling.

I know. I had some movies in my shopping cart. I was going to buy them all today and I noticed for one of them, its price increased from 12.99 to 17.99. I took that one out of my shopping cart and bought the rest of the movies. I'm sure it'll come down in price again sometime.

Yeah I quickly just bought the other titles that haven't changed in price so that doesn't happen again. I can wait for the others to come back down. Is it possible to be addicted to collecting BR's? I swear I am. I check Amazon everyday to see what the prices are. I just have this compulsion to have a complete collection.

Yes it is. I suggest you try to balance it out with cheaper hobbies too - unless you are made of money :-)

Amazon operates on leverage. As they sell products with high margin, and low margin (media), and are the largest online store in the world, they raise and lower prices, making their money on the "average" profit. It always has and will continue to be that way because of their product spread. The best thing you can do is decide what each title is worth to you, and buy them, when they are at an acceptable price. As consumers, one of the catch 22's we face, is that Amazon's carts enables us to see everytime a price has been raised and lowered. We don't see this with other stores, so it seems Amazon's is an exception with their pricing activity. Set a ceiling and work with that mental price point-it seems to be what others are doing as well. Good luck!

The easiest thing to do is use the "movie price tracker" function at blu-ray.com.
Just type in the name of the movie in the search box on the site and then select the movie from the next page that pops up. From that page, you can view an Amazon price history by clicking on the small graph icon, and you can also use "price tracker" to set a target price (price you are willing to pay). When (if) that movie hits that price target, blu-ray.com will send you an e-mail to notify you. The site will also notify you the next time you visit. Just like regular stores, Amazon's sales are for a limited time only. One interesting quirk about Amazon, however, is that Amazon not infrequently raises the price in order to lower it. E. g., they will raise the price one day so that a day or two later they can lower it and advertise significant savings over the "regular" price. Also, keep in mind that Amazon tends to lower prices during the holiday shopping season and winter, and they tend to trend upwards during the spring and summer. Your best bet is "price tracker". Use the pice history graph to see what "sale" prices usually are, and then set your price target somewhere in that neighborhood. The service is free and you are under no obligation to buy the disk if it hits your target. |

Between this morning and this afternoon about 20 titles in my cart that were saved for later changed in price. They all increased. I remember this happening last year at about this time and I didn't even look at buying a blu-ray for about six months. Just like last year, I am "stocked up" on enough movies to last me until black friday with a few netflix movies thrown in here and there. There are a couple of releases that are coming forward that I will pick up but not right away. If I wait, maybe even until BF, I can probably get them at a good price.

At least this way everyone has the same chance to pay equivalent pricing. A few years back, Amazon wanted to charge different customers different pricing on the exact same item. That plan was quickly scuttled because of public backlash.
