Default Sub settings!!

Please help! I have a 10 inch BIC sub hooked to my Harmon Kardon AVR 254 7.1 reciever. I use all seven channels. My problem is the settings on my sub..There is a switch that says "Phase 0-180" and a crossover frequency knob. what should my settings be?

Leave the phase setting at 0 and turn the crossover knob up as high as it will go. Then run the auto setup in your receiver and it should care of the rest. You may still want to do some tweaking afterward though. For more information read through these threads.

In most cases phase will remain at 0 (you would only want to mess with this in multiple-sub setups, or if there is an audible difference between 0 - 180, which there shouldn't be). You want to set your crossover freq knob all the way to its maximum (this is actually controlled through the settings in the AVR - see paragraph below).

From a high level, you want to set all of your speakers to SMALL, crossover (in the receiver) set to 80 Hz for all speakers. This activates the bass management circuitry in your AVR to send all bass signals below Hz to your sub, which is better equipped to handle those frequencies than your other speakers.

Read THIS awesome sticky by Big Daddy, which will answer all of your questions on this subject.

Great advice so far. I would add that phase can make a tremendous difference, even with one sub. Phase helps around the crossover point. Whether you have one sub or multiple, when a sub interacts with your speakers, you can have cancellations. In some cases dramatic. I don't know how in depth you want to get, but one thing you can do by ear is play some music with an instument that spans the crossover region. I like to use some Jazz with a standup bass, but a bass guitar works great as well, or maybe a kick drum. Listen to it several times both ways in stereo mode, and see what sounds better and smoother.

Of course, if you want to be more exact, I would recommend getting REW software (its free) and seeing exactly what phase is doing in your setup, but that may be more than you want to do.
