Default What is your "belief" about Blu-ray?

I couldn't come up with a good title, so bear with me.

When I first got into blu, I told myself I would only buy , new sci-fi, action, blow em' up type movies. After seeing the quality of some of the older movies, I started looking at them with a different eye.

My personal belief is that blu-ray may be the best movies may ever look. New or old. So I have been thinking about them in more a film preservation light.

I have been looking at older titles and thinking I should get this one or that one for the historical value. There are many Criterion titles for example I am interested in.

It has been an interesting shift in thought. What do you all think about it? Or am I just a goofball?

i know some people who say, "blu-ray is only good for new, loud, expensive films. everything else is pointless on blu" and won't even look / rent any film on blu other than a sci-fi / action / adventure film.

i personally never saw it that way. and now that prices are dropping at an amazing rate for every type of blu, there's no genre i'll leave out on blu. and to be honest, i believe blu-ray will be the last medium i will buy films on. i don't need films to look any different than they do here (i actually get creeped out by what could be next ), so i'm going all out.

NO GENRE GETS LEFT BEHIND!

I definitely don't think they're "the best movies will ever look". You can always make things look better. And there's plenty of BDs already that don't look much better than their DVD counterparts.

As for my initial plan, I was like you. I figured "I'll only get movies with heavy special effects, action scenes, etc." I thought "BD is pointless for things like romantic comedies and such".

But of course I abandoned that plan very quickly and am 100% converted.

I don't know whether BD will be as strong a format as DVD was, or whether it's just a placeholder until digital distribution becomes the norm, but it's not the fringe format some people still claim it is. They're releasing titles as fast, or faster, than I can buy them, so I see nothing to complain about.

Sure, there are plenty of movies that still haven't been released that I'm waiting for, but that was true of DVD as well.

I just recently got a blu ray player and I felt the same way at first. I figured I would only buy movies where the blu ray picture or audio would make a big difference over the dvd, such as the audio in some action films. My collection is small but I just started buying some used ones on Amazon, all $10 or less, so I will probably not limit myself like I had originally planned. Which is bad because I already have a list of blu rays I want when I can find them cheap enough and the list is growing. I also traded in/sold some of my dvds so I feel like I can justify it a little more. I do have Netflix though so if I'm not sure if I want to buy something, I just rent the blu ray first and then add it to my list of ones to buy.

Blu-ray has really made me a huge film lover. I was never into collecting and watching movies as I am now. I don't have to worry about double-dipping because I had only ever purchased a few movies.

This is pretty much my exact situation too. It was only a few years ago that I started getting into movies beyond passing entertainment, but I never bought DVDs because I knew there was a superior format out. Now that I can watch blurays on my PS3 I have a newly found appreciation for collecting movies I love.

Not really though. With 1080p we're already at a point of rapidly diminishing returns re: the ability of the human eye/35mm and HD resolution/screen sizes found in typical home theaters (e.g. little visual benefit in watching 4K on a 50" screen) So no, movies as we know them now really can't look much better at home.

Same here.

I will definitely start working on my classic collection soon as well, but first, must build up some basic action, sci-fi, shoot em up movies.

P.S. Very good topic.

Blu-ray is actually only about half the resolution of the actual film stock itself. So, regardless of the human ability to perceive such differences in detail, films can and will look better eventually. Blu-ray is "for now" medium. It's hard not to love. And I'll put up a fight when it's time to upgrade again, but it will happen eventually.

i used to buy DVDS because they were the best quality option at the time.

I know buy only blus because they're the best quality option now. I've never seen the point in "only getting action/newer movies". The best looking discs i own are easily movies from 20-30 years ago.

When I first got into Blu, the plan was to only buy new titles and not replace what I already had on DVD except for things like Star Wars, Jaws, Jurassic Park etc. But since I can't stand watching DVD now that I'm used to HD, that plan flew right out the window and I pretty much buy any movie I've ever liked. Luckily there's still a bit of a market for used DVDs on Amazon Marketplace

Just read about the Godfather transfer and it'll tell you what blu-ray has done for preservation.

I bought all the Blus I wanted pretty quickly (based on the combination of film quality, image/audio quality, whether I had the DVD, etc.) and now I've stopped. I've been stuck just shy of the triple-digit mark for a long while, and the only BR I bought this month was a new release (Caddyshack).
