Don't buy based on specs, buy based on customer reviews or go to a store and see it in person. There is no consistent standard to labeling lcd monitors, especially response time numbers.

And contrast ratio isn't that useful either. High contrast ratios don't tell you if the lcd sports deep blacks, or super-high-too-bright-for-your-eyes whites that you'll never use.

I have the Sony XBR3 and couldn't be happier. They don't make it in a 42", but they do have a 40" and a 46". However, if you can wait another month or two, Sony will have the next models: XBR4 & XBR5. Both offer HDMI 1.3 and a faster refresh rate. All of that is supposed to mean a 'better picture'. If any everyday consumer can tell the difference, I'm not sure. But they would be worth checking out too and considering in my opinion. I'm a Sony guy though. I've always gone with Sony for quality and my experience has guided my trust in the company.

Next, I believe, like you, that the Sharp Aquos is the best 1080p LCD on the market. Many people say that Samsung is the best LCD, but I disagree. It is a great TV and it has a great image. Although, I just didn't enjoy watching it, even the new models. They just had too much background noise that distracted my eye.

I spent a lot of time looking at rear-projections and LCD's and plasmas. I like the look of the Sony LCD the best; oh, and the Pioneer Elite Plasma 1080p (but way out of my price range). So, I'd encourage you to get out there and see what looks the best to you. You can't go wrong though with these big companies. They all put out great TV's that vary just slightly. Go to the store and look for any differences. Good luck to you with the shopping. I hope it turns out to be a positive experience.

If you read all there is to read on this subject...consumer preference for LCD is basically this:

#1 Spot: Sony / Samsung (Samy makes the panels and guts for Sony)

#2 Spot: Toshiba REGZA / Sharp Aquos (Tosh is beginning to slightly edging out Sharp)

Take your pick. You'll pay a slight premium for Sony/Samsung over the others.

IMHO Sony is the way to go. I looked for 3 months at almost every tv possible in each store in my area because sometimes a tv will look like crap at one store and then look oustanding at another. Go to SEVERAL stores and rate each tv 1-10 and then the one with the best average out of atleast 5-10 stores, that will more than likely be the tv for you! Do it that way so you're sure to be happy.

You've got to remember that some stores will hook the tvs up via HDMI, some do components, and some even do regualr coax, so I can't emphasize how important it is to look at the same tvs thru SEVERAL stores!

I plan to buy the Philip 42" 1080p LCD TV (42PFL7432D/37) soon.

Read the AVS thread for this http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=842732

Sony is the best, but they don't make a 42".. only 40 or the larger ones.

Toshiba Regaza 42" 1080p is one of the better bang for the buck LCDs. I have this one, and Picked it up for $1400. 3 HDMI and a great PQ.

For the money, I think its one of the best deals around.

Lightbulb SPECS and WHAT'S NEXT

As others have mentioned, don't totally rely on the specs, see the picture yourself. I'm not lucky enough to own a 1080P yet...I'm still waiting for "Committee" approval, but in the meantime I've scoped the Toshiba REGZA, and it has a PHENOMENAL PICTURE! The other companies to consider, that were not mentioned are WESTINGHOUSE and SPECTRE. I presently have a 1080i Spectre Monitor and many comment on the picture quality I receive from it. They recently released a 46" 1080P, and if it lives up to the hype, should be ONE SWEET DEAL. Right now, you can get it from COSTCO for $1,299.00. The Westinghouse is also reasonably priced, favorably quoted in Consumer Reports, and can likely be seen at a local Best Buy.

IF YOU'RE NOT IN A HURRY, like me, I'd suggest waiting to mid 2008 when 2 other technologies are making a move: LED Backlit LCD and Laser Based DLP. Said to offer BILLIONS of colors which should eliminate color banding, both are proven, long lasting technologies, superior contrast ratio (up to 1,000,000:1) and picture perfect color and uniformity. That said, I wish you the best of luck in your future purchase.

Same here. I have the 46' and it is the most stylish set I have ever owned. Great design, even greater performance.

AKA "Deep Color" or "xvYCC Color" when you're shopping around.

I also own a REGZA and I can vouch for it's incredible picutre, even when put up against Sammy and Sony. Yes you get a little flack around here for REGZA due to the Toshiba/HD-DVD connection. Sharp on the other hand is having serious quality control issues with their LCD's. A lot of sets are coming back to stores with dead pixels right out of the box. Caution on that if your are considering an Aquos. The top of the line REGZA's coming out now support Deep Color. You don't need to wait until mid-2008.

It depends on how much you are willing to spend really. I got a 1200$ Vizio from Costco I am really happy with so far (for the money).

Also, don't judge entirely by how it looks in the store.. especially a store like Costo which is basically a warehouse with ****ed up lights. Some places like Frys have better viewing areas. Ultimately AVS forums and reviews are you best bet to get an honest idea of customer feedback which is your most valuable tool.

It really depends on what you are trying to spend. As far as the top LCD I would have to say it is the Sony Bravia XBR series. You just simply aren't going to find anything better. The Samsung 65F models offer a slightly cheaper TV while still remaining at the top of the market.

Our favorite LCDs were the top Sonys, but the Sharps were right up there too.

We ended up with a plasma set though.

*insert 6th sense joke here*

Make an all white JPG or whatever, and burn it as a DVD (or if you player can support JPG)

If your player supports JPG, make the image 1920x1080
If your player doesn't, make a DVD at 720x480

And look for tiny dark squares
