Default Steelbooks and slipcovers

What is the big deal about them? I don't understand why people go bonkers once on of them is out? Please explain the novelty here because I am honestly dumbfounded.

I've been collecting Blu-rays for over two years now and your guess is as good as mine. I can understand steelbooks somewhat since they're sort of a stepped-up aftermarket deluxe edition, but I have no idea why people care so much about things like slipcovers, disc art, eco cases, etc. With some of these people it seems the quality of the movie itself is an afterthought.

Hey is some insight from a Steelbook Collector

I've been collecting Steelbooks for awhile now and i LOVE them. I have over 100 Blu-ray Steels and many more to come. I think they look alot cooler than just a plastic case. But i think of them as a collectible item. Not just a movie. Some people collect stamps, some people collect sports cards, some people collect comic books. Alot of us here collect Steelbooks. We love movies and it is a cool way to combine your love of movies with a hobby of collecting something. Atleast thats how some of us think. There are some people who get Steelbooks purely to hold onto them for awhile, let them gain value and then resell them to make some money.

It just depends on the person i guess. Hope i shed some light on the subject for you

Quick question about steelbooks. When you purchase steelbooks outside of the United States like from Europe and Canada, can you watch them normally in English just like a regular blu-ray movie?

It depends. Some SteelBook releases are region "B" locked and are unwatchable in US/Canada Blu-ray players and PS3s. All Canadian SteelBook releases are region "A" like the US and will play fine. A lot of SteelBook collectors will not open the SteelBook, and won't care if the movie is playable in their palyers or not . For more info check out the SteelBook forum.

And to add to that, some folks have region-free players, so regardless of what region locked a disc might be, they will be able to play it.

There is also a list of region-free discs here:

http://bluray.liesinc.net/index.php?region=a

As far as collecting Steelbooks, I think collectors vary. I don't collect Steelbooks for any financial reasons/gain, and I only collect Steelbooks of movies I really like, and I always open them.

Have you ever experienced holding a Steelbook in your hand or seen one? That's what did it for me (pictures don't do them justice).

Welcome to the forum!

Thanks for the help.

I actually own three steelbooks, Pirates DMC, Pirates AWE, and the new Lord of the Rings steelbook. I got all of these at best buy and really enjoy them and want to start getting more but I know most of the good ones are out of the country. I also do plan on opening the steelbooks I buy because I do not intend on selling them back for profit.

Thanks again for the help.

Also one more question. So for instance if I buy a I am Legend German Steelbook that, according to the What is a Steelbook thread, is a region free disk, then I could watch it on a region A player and in English?

K Thanks. Probably in a month or so I'll be looking to get those type of steelbooks. I'll just stick with the best buy steels right now.

The way where BB is heading regarding SteelBooks is not good.

They are releasing DVD size, and now PlasticBooks.

I do not care so much about slipcovers... BUT if it has a slipcover I want it to be non-damaged. If they all happen to have been taken off (target does this) then I am ok with that.

Steelbooks... I love steelbooks but fortunately I do not feel the need to collect them all. I have really enjoyed the Disney steels, and am pleased with both the transformers and the 2012 one as well.

As far as the BB LOTR one, it was disappointing to see a stickerbook, but hopefully the entire fiasco over it will help BB to make progress in their marketing strategy.

Actually I just made that name up.

The current Lord of the Rings SteelBook from BB uses a sticker and puts on the case which "I" think it's plastic.

It is, but made with cheaper material. Instead of using ink on the case, the used a sticker.
