In this day and age, you figure if a given platform wants to have certain exclusives, you almost have to make big moves like these to make it happen.

I would have thought that one of the big JPN developers like Konami or Capcom would be a more appropriate buy for Sony, but you never know.

sony needs to make a move like this or else game develops will focus on making 360/ps3 versions. this way sony can get rock star to focus solely on ps3 games. isn't GTA to be release on both xbox360 and ps3, thus losing the exclusivity to ps3.

Until Sony confirms this, we should assume that it's a rumor, but it can happen.

I do not think it will happen, Rockstar is almost too big to buy now, couple years ago, yeah they could of.

I always thought this about EA as well, think if someone bought out EA they would basically own sports games and really dominate the market.. of course EA is a multi-billion dollar company now and too big for most guys to even think about buying.

Microsoft paid Rockstar a boatload of money to get GTA...and even then RockStar announced a new series to be PS3 exclusive.

Rockstar is a big company, and I really don't think that Sony will buy them either, but they're no comparison to EA. Rockstar is actually losing tons of money this year due to the AO rating of Manhunt 2 and the delay of GTA IV.

More appropriate, yes, but Japanese corporations are usually less likely to be put up for sale than those in other nations; just part of the business culture there.

I was irritated when Microsoft bought Rare; I more blame Nintendo for not doing so when they had the chance. I think for Sony to buy Rockstar would be a fair form of retaliation. Maybe I'm biased and using double-standards here, but after Windows 98, I've good reason to not trust any Microsoft product outside of Office.

This being said, yea, I'd need more proof beofre I start thinking Sony really is buying R*.

I have been saying for ages that Sony need to do one of two things, get aggressive and buy themselves into domination, or give up completely.

Hopefully this R* rumour comes good, and maybe another big purchase like Konami. I say Konami because they have Pro Evo, the single biggest game in Europe and the UK. If Pro Evo was exclusive to the Playstation 3, the X360 really would have no chance, cheaper or not.

If there's any truth to these rumors they usually show up with outside normal range activity in the options market. A quick check with yahoo finance shows no such thing.

Rockstar, or Take Two Interactive (its parent company), valued at 1.07 billion would be a quite a nice buy considering it has very little debt on the balance sheets. BUT there is that -22.50% quarterly revenue growth lol, and absolutely no profits to speak off. A negative profit margin and negative return on equity. What a train wreck... Then again, companies like these are usually the ones purchased by bigger companies for an extreme makeover.
