Australia Deer Hunter, Le Mepris, Belle du Jour, Elephant Man, Ran, hardbook Blu-rays out now!

And they're splendid.

$23 at my local JB, I couldn't believe it. They're like $32 from their web site. These are JB exclusives, so you won't find them elsewhere. They include booklets, nice hardbook packages, they are called "Studio Canal Collection" and the ones I've previewed feature stellar PQ:

Deer Hunter: $27 at jb, amazing upgrade from previous 3-yr-old blu
Last Year at Marienbad: $23 stunning PQ and AQ
Ran: $27 at jb, best this has ever looked IMO.
Belle du Jour $23
Le Mepris $23

Other titles I didn't get in the same series:

Lost Honour of Kataraina Blum $23 i think.
Three Days of the Condor $23
Elephant Man

Marienbad and Belle du Jour say region B only on disc, others say A and B.

Discs do not slide into back of hardbook, as pictures online suggest, but instead sit on a bubble fixed to back board.

When you say 3 year old Blu-Ray of Deer Hunter, which one are you referring to?

I bought this one back in January this year, and accoring to ezydvd it came out in November 2008: http://www.ezydvd.com.au/item.zml/802732

How does the new release stack up to that release of Deer Hunter? I thought the Universal release was really great for PQ, would be amazed to hear if the new release betters it tbh.

Can you please elaborate on the PQ and SQ of all the releases where possible? I could like to purchase 2-3 of them, but am keen to hear more about the quality of these releases first.

INFORMATION OUT OF DATE; CHECK LATER POST FOR REVISED OPINION

Upgrade Deer Hunter without hesitation. I was talking about the 08 Blu ray, sorry, I assumed it was older. I've owned Deer Hunter on SD, 08 Blu Ray, and now this Studio Canal, and I can confidently tell you the PQ is an amazing upgrade. Both the 08 and SD (from same source) look faded by comparison.

AQ apparently has some pitching issues, which i can't say I've noticed, but if these things bother you you may want to search around. I would refer you to this thread, which has the most informative contributions about this series, which are identical in Germany (from Kinowelt) UK (from Optimum) and ours are just imports of the Optimum UK versions.

https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=100555 (Ran thread)

https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...ghlight=mepris (Le Mepris thread)

Both of these threads refer to the other titles in the series.

However, I can confidently tell you that Marienbad and Deer Hunter look splendid.

These screencaps are from the 2008 Universal release of Deer Hunter, and you say these don't look good?:

Screencaps (Universal release):

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...ht=deer&page=2

You honestly think the new one blows that one out of the water? Can you provide some screencaps, coz I can't imagine it looking much better than that.

Sorry, never done screencaps, don't know how. I only glanced through the 2008 blu, couldn't watch it, was disappointed; yet I found the new one stunning. Will compare again to make sure.

Fair enough, but I find it hard to believe you "couldn't watch" the 2008 release, when those screencaps I posted are taken from that release.

I understand you say the new release has stunning PQ, but do you honestly think those screencaps look unwatchable?!?

I think I may owe you an apology. I've just rewatched segments of both Blu Rays and find the difference negligible. Since both are distributed by Studio Canal, there's a good chance the master is identical. The only way to tell would be by a side-by-side comparison, and perhaps by checking the average bit rate. Having compared both, I find the new edition has good special features and, IMO, really nice packaging; but I think I was unreasonable saying 1) it blows the 2008 out of the water and 2) the 2008 was unwatchable. I've just watched the 2008 now and its very watchable. So, jury is out on the difference Kobeson.

Ah, that is what I was finding hard to understand!

I didn't want to have to double dip, but would have done so if the PQ was greatly improved - the extras and packaging are enticing. But ultimately, it is the PQ and secondary (in this case) the Audio I personally care about.

Thanks heaps for confirming it is only negligible, I can just keep my copy now

Cheers for clearing it up mate

I'm almost sure that the video transfers on the two editions are identical.

Certainly the same print has been used as a source in each case, as I identified a (very rare) white speckle that occurs identically in both.

And to my eyes, the two transfers do appear to be exactly the same in quality.

Good to hear, no need to double dip then, cheers

I bought Belle de Jour, and it looks fantastic! It was revelatory compared to my DVD as far as PQ goes, even almost verging on 3D at times, and full of small texture details etc.

Some scenes had wavering saturation or something, and there was a nice layer of (expected) grain throughout, but for a film from the 60's this looked amazing.

The Audio was very clean and as good as possible, without obviously comparing to modern day soundtracks.

PQ 9/10
AQ 9/10

Haven't checked the extras yet, but for $23 from JBHiFi you cannot go wrong!

PS - I selected "Australia" on the initial menu, and it took me into the film with English dub audio and no subtitles. I could change the audio to French, but could not select English subs. Reverting back to the top menu, and selecting "England" took me into the film with French audio and Eng subs.

DVDTimes.co.uk. Check HD reviews. The Brit release is the one JB have shipped here. Identical. Expect it not to be perfect, though.

DVDBeaver reviews including screencaps of Belle de Jour and Le Mepris, Deer Hunter, and Elephant Man. Most are of the German versions, but with the Studio Canal Collection series, they're identical in the UK, Australia, Germany et al.

One more to the wish list. Deer Hunter, portuguese subtitles are from Portugal or Brazil?

Hi, I'm wondering if there's anyone over there in Australia that can still find a Studio Canal copy of the "3 Days of the Condor" blu-ray over there in any of the stores? And... if so, is there anyone that would be willing to help me get one and ship it to the USA? I'd add a few extra bucks for your troubles. Thanks.
