According to the blu-ray.com database the UK release has a runtime of 104 minutes, while the US release has a runtime of 101 minutes. Can anyone confirm or deny? If true, what, if anything, was cut for the US release?

PAL speeds should be a HUGE factor for this, but it's in the wrong direction by the sound of it. Hopefully there's nothing cut from the US release as the UK disc was far more tame than I was expecting. Interesting movie though.

If anything the PAL version would be shorter, not longer...

I'm a huge fan of director Lucky McKee's first film May, and will probably triple dip on this title (already have the UK, want US and German steel) as anything that encourages the Blu-ray release of May is good. (Plus The Woman isn't bad itself.) If I get the US one, I'll post a review comparing the two versions. Until then hopefully someone can clear up the whole running time difference.
I've heard of group buys, but never participated. How would I go about taking part in this "G:Box" group buy? Thanks. |

I really have to disagree with the reviewer's analysis of the film. Though it's relentlessly grim, it provides a really unique gauzy texture and sustained atmosphere. I found it equal parts hilarious, horrifying, and interesting, analyzing the place of female empowerment within a corrupt and brutal modern world. If you're a fan of horror, this is a must own (The UK release preferably).
The film is also pretty acclaimed for this kind of genre film with a 74% on rottentomatoes. Give it a chance because it was the best horror film of 2011. ![]() |

It reminds me of Salo and how it gets a perfect rating on this site, despite being much more cruel, sadistic and inhumane than The Woman. The funny thing is that both movies deal with similar themes and McKee's is more creative and effective. The father in the film represents the alpha male, patriarchal American who claims to be "civilizing" the Woman as a cover for his real goal of oppressing other people for his own selfish (and deranged) desires. It isn't as subtle or affecting as May was, but I still thought it was an ambitious and stylish film. Heck, Kauffman didn't even mention May. He questions McKee's intelligence, but apparently is unaware that he directed one of the best cult horror movies of the past decade if not the entire history of film. Reviews were mixed, but Roger Ebert gave it four stars and Guillermo Del Toro heaped it with praise. I think those guys know what they're talking about and Ebert especially is unlikely to love "torture porn". If Mr. Kauffman reads this there is one thing I want to say to him: Will you give me that little rubber heart that The Collective sent with the copy of the Blu-ray? I'll pay for it. It would be a great addition to my collection. ![]() Quote:

Agreed. 'May' is a masterpiece of character-driven horror (I'm anxiously waiting for its blu-ray debut). 'The Woman' may not completely live up to it, but I think there is enough emotional and thematic backing to really make it stand out. I certainly feel that transgressive horror cinema from good (Salo, Martyrs) to ill-conceived (A Serbian Film), will always get a subjective reaction, quality aside. |
