United Kingdom Most Wanted Releases

I couldn't find a similar thread to this when I search the forum so I figured this would be a pretty good topic for discussion. I got thinking about this when I watched The Thin Red Line on tv last night, my immediate thought was 'wow this will look great in blu-ray' so I went on the computer only to find that there was no plan to release it anywhere at the moment and the only rumoured release would be from criterion and thus region locked.

For me this is one of the big reasons why Blu-ray is failing to take off fully, while I recognise The Thin Red Line had a somewhat niche audience the cinematography in it would bring out the best from Blu-ray players.

I figured that since it's not unheard of for people connected to the studios to keep tabs on this forum we could list some of the films we want released. Anywho here's a few of my most wanted.

The Thin Red Line
Older Studio Ghibli Releases
Star Wars, Indiana Jones, LotR's extended (I know they virtually go without saying)
Gladiator (We'll just pretened the current release didn't happen)
More Hitchcock (Vertigo especially)
Patton (UK release)

Couldn't agree more on those, especially Vertigo. It's an incredible film, and to see those glorious colours rendered more faithfully (plus the added clarity and the correct frame rate) would be a real thrill. North By Northwest looks beautiful on blu-ray, and there must be a huge audience for more Hitchcock. I'd particularly love to see Rear Window and Notorious on blu.

My wishlist:

Lots of Billy Wilder, but especially The Apartment. The restoration looked beautiful in the cinema, so bring it to blu-ray already!

Lots of Orson Welles, but especially Touch of Evil. The PAL DVD image is hazy to the point of unwatchability, and they cropped it to widescreen from its original Adamedy Ratio. I'd love to see the proper framing restored (but the "director's" cut) for blu-ray.

Classic Woody Allen. MGM's DVDs are pretty poor, especially Radio Days which is plagued with that "screen door" effect and all kinds of digital artifacts. Good tranfers of that, Annie Hall, The Purple Rose of Cairo, Hannah & Her Sisters, Broadway Danny Rose and Manhattan would be welcomed.

Older Coen Brothers. We got Fargo but there's some disturbing edge enhancement in there. I'd love Blood Simple, Barton Fink, The Hudsucker Proxy (was I the only one that liked that?), The Big Lebowski and The Man Who Wasn't There faithfully presented on blu-ray. Please.

The Incredibles. We've got lots of classic Pixar already, with the Toy Stories coming out early next month. Apart from Finding Nemo it's the only one left un-blued, but at least there are rumours about Nemo. Why no blu-ray for one of the finest Pixar films? (At least we can safely expect it'll happen eventually...)

Basically, more classics. Even old films benefit massively from the move to high-def, giving them a more filmic quality (and us folks in PAL regions can finally see them at the correct frame rate!) and improving the contrast (for b&w) and colours (for Technicolor). I know I'm not the only one who'd be thrilled to see more classics on blu.

Sorry, I seem to have written a dissertation.

Thumbs up

I definetely agree about Thin Red Line it is an excellent film and that blu ray haven't taken off quick enough, but it will in a year or so.

1. Cobra
2. Running Man
3. The Game
4. American President

These should definetely get released on blu ray. Does anyone agree.

Lots of Asian films I'd like to see on Blu, especially those early Ghiblis.

And I'd really love to know when Barry Lyndon will get a release.

Alien/Aliens
Back To The Future

TV wise, I'm waiting for the Lost Collection, though I haven't seen any mention of a UK release....

Default Fox Musicals

I'd love to see Fox release all the classic Rogers and Hammerstein Musicals on Blu Ray The King and I and The Sound Of Music and many others , however in the current recessionary market price is always a consideration , and they need to understand this and bring prices way down!

btw monkeygun, I read someone posting this on another forum:

'It seems they are re-releasing Gladiator this year after the botched last release.'

Edit: Just noticed this (you've probably already read this):

Not a UK one, but the BD is region-free so I will import it eventually (even though it's my least favourite Pixar film).

You've probably seen it, but SSBlu's last post in the Upcoming Disney thread mentions a UK Bugs Life is due in August....
