SYNOPSIS

An uncompromising visionary and a true maverick of European cinema, the Masters of Cinema Series is proud to present three films by Andrzej Żuławski, all making their UK debuts on Blu-ray from new 4K restorations.

Rich with multilayered symbolism and apocalyptic imagery, The Third Part of the Night is Żuławski’s highly influential debut feature film. After his whole family is slaughtered during the Nazi-occupation of Poland, Michal (Leszek Teleszyński) decides to join the resistance but descends into madness after encountering a doppelgänger of his murdered wife.

The Devil is a violent tale of Satanic seduction during the Prussian invasion of Poland in the 17th century, which proved so controversial upon release that it was banned for 16 years.

And finally, On the Silver Globe, Żuławski’s masterpiece about a team of astronauts who land on a desolate planet and start a new society. When filming was 80% complete, the Polish government ordered the production to be shut down and all the negatives be destroyed. Miraculously, the original film reels were preserved and ten years later the film was presented at the Cannes Film Festival to great acclaim.

Considering how visually striking his films can be, that's not the picture I would have chosen for the box. Obviously I'm still getting it anyway.

Not too familiar with Zulawski, though I loved Possession. Are these highly regarded films or more like early curios for Zulawski fans?

On the Silver Globe is an unfinished film that he very cleverly patched together almost a decade after filming was halted. Definitely not a curio. It must have had a a huge budget too.

The 2021 doc that's included is 94 mins by the way, so that's a pretty great extra.

Possibly so they can be sold separately later: one standalone and one double bill.

Less discs = cheaper to produce. Hopefully they get Mr. Mackenzie to author it otherwise that first disc is gonna be really cramped.

Seeing as they've actually got separate artworks and spine numbers, this would be quite easy to do, so they might well do that. Then again, Eureka don't often split things up when reissuing so it could just end up being a 2-disc single keepcase with a slimmed-down booklet, much like their other reissues. We'll have to see...

Always happy to see Eureka keeping the price down, in this case by curbing the number of discs (if they have trouble keeping it to 2-discs, I'm sure they'll make it 3-disc in the end, though they rarely change the number of discs post-announcement; apparently The Bullet Train was initially 2-disc, but they changed it to 1-disc on announcement by removing one of the alternate cuts). If this was an Arrow or Criterion box set it'd be more like £50-60.

Eureka have been on a roll lately with regards to MoC, lots of great surprises with more to come apparently (definitely more Japanese stuff). Curious to see if they have any other Polish films...

Has there been any indication if these films will be released separately at some point (specifically On The Silver Globe)?

It is one of the most powerful films I have ever seen, certainly top 5, and I think it easily ranks as the greatest SciFi film - even above Stalker (similar genetics given the one book was inspired by the other), Blade Runner, 2001. For comparison, it plays like Marketa Lazarova was re-shot on another planet. Wide-angle-lensed 4th-wall-breaking direct perspective shots done WITHOUT a steadicam running full tilt across hills and beaches, it is overwhelmingly immersive like almost no other. VR from almost 50 years ago (we probably didn't get a theatrical experience that could rival until the 3D on the original Avatar). That this remained unseen until all the post-1975 SF works that seem indebted to it - a perpetual mystery. As for people lamenting that Jodorowsky's Dune was never made, "well actually..."

Even at 80% complete it is transcendent - even the bridging narrative sections shot in 1988 to cover the gaps feel integral to its spell. This film will ruin you for others for a long while. Impossible to shake its images even years on.

An English friendly release of the remaster was long overdue. Not getting a 4K release, and a few more discs for supplements breathing room, the only downside. This will be the release of the year unless Criterion pulls out a 4K of the complete Akira Kurosawa priced in line with their 30 disc Bergman set.

"It's everything, isn't it?" And then some.

Camera Obscura in Germany announced their Boxset, no release date yet, but they say that The Devil and The Third Part of the Night are 2K restorations since there’s no 4K restoration for these two. They’ll do three discs. rigid case with Digipacks, and the artworks is gorgeous:
