The 3D edition come from a new 4k restored digital master from 6k scan of the original negative. I hope that also the 2D edition uses this new master

I have no problem with the 2D release currently out.

However I will buy this for the 3D, and if the 2D on this new release is from a 2011 4k remaster? Hell yeah. Good bonus, instant double dip.

NYT adds that the studio is considering a February release for the post-converted pic, possibly with a one-week exclusive showing on domestic IMAX screens.

The easiest thing for Paramount to do would be to dump the old 2D Blu-ray in there, not least because it's already got the special features on it.

I wonder if they've opened up the ratio at all? This was shot Super 35 and certain home video versions came in about 2:1 (IIRC) before the SE DVD and Blu-ray restored the theatrical 2.35 framing. As much as I hate to see ratios getting ****ed with, Top Gun has always looked very tight in 2.35, and a 1.78 3D version could look spec-freakin'-tacular.

I actually won't mind seeing this in 3D. Will seriously consider upgrading my 2D.

No this was done because the intention was to release it as a buildup to the now cancelled Top Gun 2. After Tony Scotts suicide they had to decide what to do with the converted film either release it to theaters or direct to BD/DVD, they obviously took the latter route.

What kind of question is this???? In 2012 you are asking if I've seen a particular blu-ray on an HDTV??

Ok then. Moving along from dud question of Q4 2012.

I think it looks so far from 'yucky'. It got a 4 on this site, and I concur with it's rating. I never said it was reference. But it's doesn't look DNR in a bad way. I still see grain, and so much detail and crisp image.

Top Gun in 3D?! Wow! I didn't see that coming. The studios keep finding new ways to make money! All they have to do is release more of these catalog titles in digibook, steelbook, special edition box set packaging, etc.! We're suckers for those!

No problem. If a film was shot entirely in 2D it has zero business being converted to 3D. It's no different than OAR and lossless audio.

Matter of opinion.

It's obviously not useless since there are a lot of us who will enjoy the presentation in 3D.
