Do any of you have a preference between the two technologies and can tell which one produces a better picture? And what are the differences between the two technologies?
From reading many reviews of the movies on this site, the ones that get the best reviews for picture quality are on MPEG-4. Top rated movies for PQ: MPEG-4: No Country For Old Men Master And Commander Close Encounters Of The Third Kind The Incredible Hulk Transformers 1 & 2 |

AVC tends to be better at higher bitrates while VC-1 is often stronger at lower bitrates. Compression tools for AVC are getting more attention these days, so it probly has the upper hand in terms of overall quality and efficiency.
I've seen plenty of fine looking blu-rays in both codecs. The Dark Knight is an example of excellent VC-1 PQ. AVC titles you listed all look top notch too, along with Pirates of the Caribbean and Casino Royale. |

Musashi is right, in the end there is no such thing as a better/ less good CODEC. It is all about what you do with it, VC1 and AVC are extremely similar with some benefits in one over the other. But VC1 was created by MS while AVC by the ITU and MS , my understanding, has more or less given up on it while many companies are working on better AVC encoders. Also if it is about deciding what to work with (professionaly), my understanding is the new 3D BD standard only works with AVC, so I definetly see it as the future over VC-1)
