Default Devil May Cry Adaption in the Works

Screen Gems Buys 'Devil May Cry' Rights; Kyle Ward Writing Script

The Resident Evil series proved to be a monster hit (no pun intended) for Screen Gems and Sony. So the fact that the companies are going back to video games as the RE films get stretched a bit thin should come as no surprise. Appropriately, Screen Gems has even turned to a video game franchise that was born from a concept intended as a Resident Evil sequel. That would be Devil May Cry, the story of Dante, white-haired demon killer and trenchcoat lover.

Kyle Ward (Kane & Lynch) is the man chosen to script after Screen Gems and Sony went through a variety of possible writers. This is seen as a potential franchise, but what isn’t as of late? Game publisher Capcom has already done a lot of the ground work, establishing the game series as a massive brand with comics, anime and toy spinoffs.

The question is: how the hell does anyone make a movie out of Devil May Cry? Dante is a cocky and very irritating hero at the center of a game that is less about story than it is striving for perfection in one demonic encounter after another. Remove the gameplay, which is filled with high-flying acrobatic multi-weapon attacks, and you end up with a series of cutscenes that, even in the context of the game, just aren’t that interesting. I can see why people love the gameplay — it is extremely challenging, and nailing high ratings as you battle the fierce, relentless AI is satisfying — but I can’t see wanting to watch two hours centered around the character. The acrobatic moves might look cool on screen, but you can see those in the other media offshoots of the game, too.

But that global franchise probably renders me in the minority. I don’t see any reason to watch the Resident Evil movies at this point, either, but global box office proves that a lot of people do. Screen Gems is inevitably hoping to get the same audience with Devil May Cry. But will Paul WS Anderson get involved?
Source

This is one of my favorite game series. They better not screw this up. I think Devil May Cry could make an excellent movie, IF DONE RIGHT. But so many video game adaptations turn out so bad...Please let this be one that transcends that. A kickass, dark, black humor filled adventure.

Meh. They tried in 2007 when DMC4 was on its way but no ground was ever made.

Well, it looks like they're trying again. We'll see if this one gets off the ground. I hope it does in a way, because I think it would make an excellent movie. But I hope it doesn't at the same time, because I don't want to be completely let down by a terrible adaption of the games. Catch 22.

It was originally supposed to be made by Gaga Communications, a Japanese studio, back in 2005.

Most will think it it's a bad idea but I personally can't wait for a DMC movie and really hope this it get's made this time. Can't possible be any worse then the Uncharted movie.

Super challenging film to make imo. I'm not sure how I would like to see them handle Dante on screen, though it can't be worse than the Street Fighter movies right?

One would think not, but I'm not so sure sometimes. This will be a really interesting adaption if done well. It could have some absolutely awesome visuals.

I'd have bigger faith in a Japanese-produced movie than another Hollywood adaptation.

How to ruin Devil May Cry:

1. Have Ninja Theory make a game featuring a new, emo Dante.
2. Make a movie.

It's the perfect one-two punch of franchise death.

If they are going to make a movie, they should consider an actor with plenty of charisma, and sopme ham to make it work. James Franco or Nathan Fillion are good choices for example.

It is an over-the-top game right?

Got to agree as much as I like Fillion I don't think he would make a good Dante.

I don't know, he seem like the guy who would exaggerate it when it should be downplayed. I kinda like the idea of James Franco, but I'm still on the entire project, in all honesty it would make an entertaining move easily, but it would also be terrible really easy aswell.

It need a sort of 80's action movie vibe going on in it, then I'd be all for it.

I can't really see an actor playing Dante though, maybe Rober Downey Jr. but he would have to de-age a bit, and completly change his look, but the personality is there.
