Default Sin City Audio oddity

Was watching Sin City after the longest time after getting it back from a friend finally. I noticed that at certain point of conversations, there is a high pitched frequency in the background like it was overcompressed. I thought it was my speakers or receiver (biting my nails). However, when i tried any other disc, there was no problems.

Maybe its my copy of Sin City? Its the Special Edition version. Anyone else notice this in their playback?

I noticed it too and posted a couple of times about it in the Sin City thread...

It's present on every release I've owned so far:
- Frank Miller's Sin City (Recut & Extended Edition) [DVD] from Alliance (Canada)
- Sin City [Blu-ray] from Alliance (Canada)
- Sin City (Two-Disc Theatrical & Recut, Extended, and Unrated Versions) [Blu-ray] from Dimension (US)

That's a comfort knowing Im not alone on it. It's distracting for sure from an otherwise great audio track.

the first thought I had was I blew a tweeter and it was hissing everytime it hit a certain range. tried other discs, no problems, as well as a frequency sweep from a test disc.

I should have searched the Sin City threads for it if it was brought up previously.

Suprised the main reviews dont mention this though.

I'm surprised as well but then again I didn't notice it on the DVD release until I got the Blu-ray. The sad thing is that now I can't help but notice it.

Never noticed it. I've watched it maybe three times. Any specific scene where it's obvious?

I noticed it as well. I can't say I remember noticing it on DVD, but it definitely caught my ear and annoyed me for 2 hours on blu. I thought it was my center speaker, which I promptly went out and upgraded the next day. I haven't listened to it again since then, but I'll have to do that now that you've reminded me.

If it occurs on the DVD and other versions as well, it is a mastering issue and not a product of the transfer. I only bring this up because 1) You're not likely to ever be rid of it on subsequent releases and 2) Most review sites (including this one) place great emphasis on transfers being true to the original. So, if that is how Rodriguez et al wanted it (for whatever reason), and was on the theatrical release that way, then the audio scores tend to reflect that even if it doesn't sound so great to some of us. As an example (albeit perhaps a poor one), The Wrestler gets high scores for PQ nearly everwhere I go. This has got to be one of the grittiest, grainiest, unattractive picture I have ever seen. But it was true to the original, so people score it high. Whatever happened to scoring based on the quality of the cinematography, and if the cinematography (or audio) is awful, then why shouldn't the score be reduced regardless of how true the transfer is?

But I digress...

Well whatever the reasoning is, Sin city sounds like it was recorded through a crapping out old Sound Blaster 16 PCI to be honest.

I see that some speakers 'hide' this distortion better then others maybe since not everyone can hear it. Perhaps its also that all of us have a different level of hearing, or a combination of both.

Im going on a limb here thinking horn based speakers will probaly reflect this frequency more then others perhaps since they tend to be on the bright side.

For myself I can hear it. Its totally distracting. I never heard it in the theater as far as I could remember also albeit this movie is around 1/2 a decade old.

Id agree to a 5/5 AQ, however, 2/5 for me. Just rubbish as it is right now. Its the only movie out of my 60 blurays that does this, so Im ruling out audio equipment as a fault.

Its almost reminds me of how some people could see rainbows on DLPs and others could not. i cannot see any rainbows on DLP nor anyone who has watched mine has ever brought it up. I guess it all ends up on what side of the fence you fell over.

It's a mastering issue. Kill Bill, Vol. 2 and The Kingdom have the same high pitched hum. On The Kingdom it's pretty darn loud in the FBI conference room scene.

I remember when this DVD came out, I mentioned it and no one else believed me until a few days after I posted that I caught it. It almost sounds like the high pitched sound of a monitor was picked up on set or something. I'm glad other people took notice now though.

I was aware of this problem all the way back in early 2009 when I read this review.

I am surprised some of you are just realizing it now...lol.

This hum is the reason I never bought the dvd or the blu-ray. I had hoped it wouldn't be there on the blu-ray but it was.

Do you hear it on both the re-cut and the whole film? The re-cuts are all I have watched on the Blu, and I haven't noticed this at all. And I have horn-based Klipsch towers and surrounds, which should indeed make it more noticeable.

If you noticed in the year old review I posted it mentions that this sound may not be noticeable to some.

Oh wow, I noticed this back when I bought the Alliance import.

Didn't think it was as widespread as this - but I have noticed that hum in a few other movies as well.
