Default Officially broke...

Well my 10 year old Sony big screen is about to take a dump so i finally got with the year 2007 and bought a 42" 1080p Toshiba LCD, the tax free weekend made it a easier choice.

While cruising the newegg site getting my hdmi cables and optical conn. I decided it was also time to pull the trigger on a ps3 60gb version while they are $500. With the 5 free movies which ones are of 1080p quality, I'm really wanting to get ones that flex the muscles of this new technology. I have heard some of the ports to blu-ray are not very good and can be very grainy.

Also if anyone could kindly point me in the right direction for some of the good ones currently out, 300 and planet earth i have heard are good ones to start with.

Thanks for any help and sorry mods if this is in the wrong section, please go easy on me, I'm a newb.

Are you looking for high quality picture and sound? Black Hawk Down, Underworld: Evolution, The Patriot, both Pirates movies, and Treminator 2:Judgement Day are some of my favorites. Try looking up some of the reviews posted on this site, done by highly respected individuals in their fields.

The Prestige, Casino Royale, Corpse Bride, Happy Feet, The Departed, Crank (it's only an MPEG-2 encode, but looks insane!), Firewall, Flags Of Our Fathers, The Fountain (not the greatest movie, but extremely visually powerful), Pirates Of The Carribean, Superman Returns, Swordfish, Training Day, Apocalypto, Shooter.... and the list goes on. But, that should get you started for now.

This list leans heavily towards the PICTURE QUALITY and is not necessarily including the SOUND QUALITY as recommendations.

For PQ I'll also add Layer Cake, Identity, Ghost Rider, World Trade Center, and yes TMNT is a guilty pleasure.

Apocolypto is the best picture I have seen yet on my 1080p lcd. Most are good though.. I think a better question would be which ones to avoid. I have heard House of Flying Daggers is the worst transfer being no better than the DVD. Which is sad because it is one of my fav movies. I am going to Netflix it soon to see for myself.

just because a movie is grainy...doesn't mean it's a bad port...

certain movies are intended to have grain..

movies I'd purchase

Apocalypto
Kingdom of Heaven
The Prestige
Casino Royale
Layer Cake

just off the top of the head...

I thought Hellboy was also pretty good as far as PQ/SQ. one other flick I would put as a reference disc is Kingdom of Heaven. Alot of the others mentioned I would also agree w/. One that ASTOUNDED me as far as difference in PQ (between DVD & BR), surprisingly, was BLAZING SADDLES. absolutely night and day difference there.

IF you liked Blazing Saddles, check out "The Searchers" truly amazing what a 50 year old movie can look like with a top notch transfer from old school wide screen film. This will quiet anyone who thinks that old film is not as sharp as new.

Superman Returns to me has the best balance of quality picture and sound. That and both Pirates movies. 300 really isn't something you'd say, "hey, you want to see HD at it's best? watch this."
