Star Wars: Droids, Star Wars: Ewoks, Ewok movies, Star Wars Christmas Special, Prequels, Clone Wars, Rebels, Resistance, Rogue One, Solo, Star Wars Lego movies, Sequels, The Mandalorian
After being exposed to all the movies and cartoons/tv shows that came after the Original Trilogy, how have they improved your viewing of the Original Trilogy now? What made certain OT characters more interesting and what made certain OT stories more interesting that appeared in A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi? Here are mine (in no order of importance): - IG-88: I always thought this was such a lame-looking character in Empire Strikes Back and I remember noticing how his action figure would always be on shelves, with no one interested in buying him. But now after watching The Mandalorian, his backstory is so awesome and emotional, as well as a bad-ass bounty hunter - more so than Boba Fett. I now respect IG-88 more than Boba Fett and now I want his action figure. - Obi-Wan Kenobi: Sort of like two great actors playing young and old Magneto in the X-Men movies, I have loved Ewan McGregor, Alec Guinness, and the cartoon Obi-Wan versions - all adding more depth to his character without messing up his legacy in the Original Trilogy. I have a feeling his upcoming Disney show will add even more depth. - Palpatine: Ironically, I feel that, mainly due to being an awesome actor, being the same actor in all the films, as well as one of the few characters that got great and juicy dialogue in the prequels, as well as being a cool presence in the cartoons, Palpatine received a better backstory than Darth Vader/Anakin. I was happy to see him back in Rise just for fun curiosity shoehorned in there to see him play such a great character one more time, but for me Palpatine died in Return of the Jedi. - the "stealing of the Death Star schematics" situation at the beginning of A New Hope: the existence of Rogue One really made the opening of A New Hope more interesting and emotional. - Luke and Obi Wan's short conversation about the Clone Wars in A New Hope: One little line of dialogue about it had no impact before the existence of the new Star Wars stuff. Now that we have so many movies/shows focused on the Clone Wars, the conversation has a lot more impact. - Jawas: the more the Jawas show up in anything after the Original Trilogy, even parodied in Spaceballs, especially their episode focus in The Mandalorian, I just love them even more. For all the other characters popping up in the new stuff, I feel like their legacy has been slightly tainted, such as with Darth Vader, Luke, Leia, R2D2, Yoda, C3PO, and Boba Fett. The backstories and post-OT stories didnt really help or benefit. Although, I'm still happy to see what they did and appreciate their existence. For other main characters that didnt get tainted from the new movies/shows, I feel like Lando, Tarkin, and Chewie came out alive, without their legacy tainted - not really tainted and not really improved. For your main question though, I totally agree with you on Palpatine. He's one of the greatest parts of the Prequels and they added a lot to his character. |

On a side note, there are also backstories that popped up to characters in the new stuff too and some other interesting combos of character development:
- Before the post- 2000 new stuff, Boba Fett actually seemed cooler thanks to his awesome appearance in the Christmas Special cartoon. (even was cool in his Droids cartoon scenes) but he still went out like a biotch in Return of the Jedi and his childhood development in Attack of the Clones and the cartoons didnt really help his legacy much. - Dooku was developed more in the Clone Wars Cartoon between Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith - General Grevious was awesome in the cartoons before appearing in live-action Revenge of the Sith - Darth Maul has received more depth in cartoons and was exciting to see him appear in Rogue One - Baby Yoda: Baby Yoda....Baby Yoda. He is just huge. Such an impact like Wicket and Gizmo. I cant stop thinking of Baby Yoda. |

Im not a big fan of the prequels. But one i suppose small thing that it added in my head now when watching the originals, is it adds an extra layer when i hear the word Anakin mentioned in the originals. (altho i don't connect Hayden Christian to being Darth Vader when watching the originals, so it doesn't add to much of a layer in that respect). It's literally just hearing the name really.
