Default Receiver help

I just hooked up my Onkyo 606, I have my PS3 going to HDMI 1 on the receiver..So I played I robot and chose DTS-HD 5.1 from the audio menu on the DVD....So when I play the movie, I don't see it displayed on the Receiver. Do I need to set the HDMI input to DVD (I thought I read it was the default).

thanks for looking

Which PS3 do you have? The older (non-slim) PS3's don't bitstream, so you won't see it displayed on your receiver.

phat or slim ps3? phat you wont see dts hd displayed only mutlich. with a slim you can select bitstream (vs lpcm) so that the receiver can decode, only then will you see dts hd on the receiver or even true hd. if your getting any audio at all, then setting hdmi 1 to dvd is already done.

I have the Fat one....so that would explain that. So is it really decoding DTS-HD...Is the PS3 actually doing the decoding instead of the receiver in my case?
It if I can ask, what is bit streaming compared to mutlichannel.?

thanks again for the info

PS3 is decoding for you. There's no difference in the sound at all. I've been using a setup similar to yours for years now and am very happy with the audio.

There is a way to check it with your controller, but I forget how. It'll show you what the audio track is.

Sorry, I don't game so I don't use the controller. maybe someone can help the OP out.

no problem. but i have found it much easier to program my receivers remote with the functions (like the controller 'select' to 'display') using the nyko blu wave remote and using that instead of the controller. its so much better and easier to use.
