Default Thieves choose Blu-ray over HD DVD in retail store break-in

... or proof Joe Six Pack wants Blu-ray.

Quote:
Seattle police are investigating a Sunday morning burglary at the Northgate Silver Platters, where employees say thieves grabbed about 200 Blu-ray discs with a retail value of more than $7,000.

"They basically took our whole Blu-ray section," said Mike Batt, a vice president for the company that has four King County locations. "Genre didn't matter to them."

A store security system was triggered about 6:40 a.m. when a double-paned window was broken, according to a police report. The Northgate store has no video surveillance, but "there's no way this was all done by one person," Batt said.

Costs of players and discs have kept Blu-ray -- a format that can hold more than five times as much information as a single-layer DVD -- from being extremely popular, Batt said. Discs are about $35 each and Playstation 3 is the least-expensive player, retailing at $499.

"They seemed to know what they wanted," he said, adding the window was the only property damage.

The Northgate Silver Platters has had three previous smash-and-grab break-ins, with thieves taking about 20 CDs near entrances in two burglary cases, Batt said. In 1988, burglars grabbed all CD players at the Northgate store.

"Whoever did that was never caught," Batt said, who hopes other retailers will be alert if people attempt to return the discs. "The sad thing is the success rate of catching anyone is very slim."

There were 3,266 thefts from buildings reported in 2006, according to Seattle police records. Less than 8 percent of $2.49 million dollars in stolen property was recovered.

"There are burglary detectives for every precinct who are forwarded evidence and incident reports from uniformed patrol officers on the scene," Seattle police spokesman Jeff Kappel said. "Burglary is a felony and each report is taken very seriously."

This just in...

Bill Gates, co-founder of Microsoft, was arrested earlier today when his 7-series BMW was pulled over for running a stop sign. When officers approached the vehicle, they noticed a blue-ish tint to Mr. Gates' skin, and asked if they could search the vehicle. Officers first suspected that Mr. Gates might be the wanted fellon "Gargamel" who is accused of running a Smurf smuggling route between the US and Canada. Smurfs are a delicacy all over the world, but only a few countries, including Canada, allow for the consumption of Smurfs.

What officers found was not Smurfs, but rather Blu-ray movies. It turns out Bill Gates was trying to skew sales data against Blu-ray so that it appeared the Microsoft-backed rival HD DVD was selling better (it has yet to beat Blu-ray on weekly sales this year).

Mr. Gates was released on $1,000,000 bond and will be arraigned August 12th on charges of theft.

Do these count in the Nielsen numbers?

I've been thinking about unloading many of my used HD DVD and Blu-ray discs. Maybe I should hold off now so I don't get the police knocking on my door.

I don't know if this article has been posted over at AVS, but if it isn't that would be funny to put that headline as the subject title.

hey, you only steal what you know is quick to sell on at top dollar. The real story is they left the HD-DVD section behind. nothing like a dead weight in a fast get away, though they would of had somthing valueless to throw at the cops......

More than five times as much as a DUAL-LAYER DVD! Wish these reporters would research properly.

This BD stealing phenomenon has also reached Las Vegas. I recently went to a Las Vegas Wal Mart and I asked "where are the Blu-ray where are the Blu-Ray Movies". They told me that since the store was in a "high-theft" area, they did not carry any BD titles. They directed me to another Walmart on the other side of Las Vegas that did have a small selection of BD titles. Crazy huh?
