Default How to tell if a movie is HD or not

I found a simple way of knowing if a movie is hd or not. Here is my personal formula........If you watch a movie and you struggle to see if it is hd, then it is NOT HD. This is not about directors intent, just visual stimulation only. It took me 3 months to hone my skills to come to this conclusion

Personally, if it's blurry. Then it's not HD. Then again, there's several BDs that has bad PQ.

That's it in a nutshell. If it's blurry, it's not HD. HD stands for High Definition, not Blurry Images.

you could still get blurry images from an HD film, if you stream it.

I'm trying to buy all the hype about the Directors "artistic intent" and I do to a certain point, but I would be lying if I said it wasn't still a let down to open up a shiny new disc only to witness a fuzzy image on a 50 inch screen.

Well the point of this technology was to replicate as close as possible to what the movie is supposed to look like.

Not to give every movie a perfect window like clear sharpness.

Yes, it was shot with digital cameras and shooting in the dark doesn't look good with those particular cameras I guess, I don't know if there are any digital cameras that can "look good" in dark settings, but Mann wanted it that way.

Simple, if it's 720p, 1080i or 1080p, it's HD. You're trying to define "HD-quality", which is highly subjective.

Even then, the source may not be HD quality. Just for kicks, I took an old VHS home movie and converted it to 720p. Still looked like crap on my 50 inch TV.

With the right software and time, I probably could have cleaned it up some, but in the end, the source was still not HD quality.

Yeah, I thought about that argument, but I didn't think that's where this is coming from. Too many people think that unless it looks like a Pixar film, it's not truly HD. Are there some bad transfers out there? Absolutely, but HD is not supposed to magically change how the original film looked.

I totally agree. NOt many people take into consideration the quality of the original source, how it was scanned in (2K, 4K, 6K, 8K), what post processing was done to it (EE, DNR, etc.).

I don't mind the grain because I realize the type of film used inherently has different grain "personalities" but I do hate all the other things used to try to "fix" a film before putting it on BD. On the other hand, I hate the digital cameras that have no grain and then they try to add it in PP.

These arguments usually go hand in hand with black bars.

True but on larger screens (i'm not so sure about normal tv screen sizes as I don't use them very often) it is immediatly obvious.

I don't like the digital look either. I always feel the movies that are sharp with fine grain look the best. I recently viewed King Kong and the whole look of it did not appeal to me, just as heavy grain doesn't look good either.
