Default Hey Starting Out Need Guidance Please.

I'm a big Video game buff, but never dived into the world of fantastic audio. Now that I'm older, married, and living on my own I think its time to get started. I want to eventually create a 7.1 system from scratch. I was contemplating on getting HTIB but I'm a sort of perfectionist, so getting something less than the max will never satisfy me.

Anyway I want to start my systme and Ive heard many things and seen many Things.....I'm confused as I think I should be with starting out

I just have a Apartment, so I want to start out from receiver and slowly get my equipment together and when I move make a dedicated room.

Now i Heard to start out it's best to go with a receiver, and theirs three things I see that spark my intrest

The Kardon's, Onyx 607, Pioneer Elite

Those three recievers seem great, which is a better starter receiver? If theirs any others let me know so I can examine them.

If you could also I was told to start out with a 2.1 channel or 3.1 channel
So I don't know what speakers I should add??

Thank you for any help

Hello and welcome to the wonderful world of audio, you are about to be completely sucked in!

Those are some nice receivers you have listed. The Onkyo 607 is quite popular and considered a great mid-level receiver while the Elites will cost you a bit more in money.

What is your budget first of all?

Unless you're got some money to burn...I would personally start up slow and get the components that you want. The upgrade bug bites fast and the next thing you'll notice is that you'll be wanting new gear.

Get yourself a nice receiver that's future-proof (HD codecs, HDMI connections). After that, start off with some floor stand speakers and work your way up. The internet has tons of info regarding tips on starting a new sound system, reviews on products and other stuff. Go to your local audio stores and try auditioning some speakers before you buy them.

Good luck, make it fun!

Yeah the budget isnt an issue as this is going ot be long procedure in which I always take awhile ot make decisions.

Future Proof, LOL okay reading enough the lossless codecs and TruHD sound iI important as I have a PS3slim and just purchased a 50InchG10 Tv.

Just purchased my TV Stand and already have a CT-100 soundbar for now.

Which Systme is more Futureproof The Onkyo 607 or the kardon Boi's on ebay refurbed??

Kardon Will go magically with my color scheme but black is fine, at a later date ill purchase an elite.

Couldn't agree more. Although, let's be honest, it's more like "future resistant". Yes, start with a receiver fronts, and a sub if you can't get some good full range speakers. For the receiver, if you think you're going to eventually wind up with some power hungry speakers, get a receiver with pre-outs so you have the option of adding separate amps later on. Then you can keep the receiver as a pre-amp. Next on the list will be a center channel. You'll need it to properly adjust vocals in movies.

If you went to NewEgg, they can range from around $220 for the cheapest pair of towers to over $1000 for Polks....

Def up to you. Build slowly, get the best speakers you can possibly afford(they will last you forever). I'm a fan of Polk and floorstanding speakers, to me they sound amazing. Onkyo is a good brand also, you wont have any regrets purchasing one.

It just depends on what you want to spend you can get Klipsch and Polk audio front towers for as little as $200 for a set or as much as $3000 for a set, you will probably want something in the middle though.

Being in an apartment depending on the layout big floor speakers may not be the most practical thing. The larger the system the more attention it draws whether it be annoyed neighbors from the noise or thieves in the area.

I would recommend getting a good pair of bookshelf sized speakers for the fronts and smaller satellites for your surround. Then when you move to a house upgrade the fronts to towers and move the bookshelfs to rear surrounds.

To answer your question, they only have black or cherry. Those are the cheapest of the Monitor line of speakers. Its hard to give good recommendations when no budget is expressed. I will just say that is the bottom pair of towers from Polk you could get from NewEgg. Anywhere from here is up....

But they sound fine for the price. Sound is subjective, and what I think sounds fine, may not to you. However, since they are so popular, Polk must be doing something right.

If you want some Polks or Klipsch, head over to your local Best Buy and audition them. Take a listen for yourself before purchasing. The Magnolia room also has some "higher-end" stuff, demo the stuff and just buy online if you want to save money.

If money is not an object and you're looking to dive into some of the higher quality brands, find out if there's an specialty home audio stores around your area and pay them a visit.

Well I Like the price for the monitor series, and the reviews seem nice...

To seeweeda, I was thinking about that but I'm on the top floor and our building has pretty good resistance to sound, I rather pay now for what I want and utilize just the center speaker or one tower, but iI uess if I got bookshelfs it wouldn't matter I'll eventually use them via 7.1 setup

My budget, I'm looking for average gear right now, probably the Monitor series the 60 and 70 look Nice

I don't know the difference in three subwoofs and 4 subwoofs, but they both seem to look pretty much what I want.

Then I'm checking out the center channel as well, Don't Know abou tthat but since a spot on my tv stand will be dedicated to the mid channel its okay, I'm going to post picture of my setup so far tonight so you guys can see an idea of the space I'm wokring with

I'm going to wait to set up 7.1 untill we move into a house in a year, but I want to purchase my equipment so I can be ready, I'm loving the advice, and appreciate all the input

Personally, I'd rather get a brand new 607 than a refurbished receiver.

Is that $500 per speaker or $500 for all 3 speakers? If $500 for all 3 you probably won't find anything in Klipsch for that price unless you buy one of the 5 shelf speaker Quintet series sets. Though if you look for deals you could find something like this center or these fronts. The center channel is discontinued and normally retails for $400 so a good price on that one. The fronts are the low end Klipsch line.

For Polk audio you could do something like this for $500 center and fronts
