Default Would you trade a PS3 for an Oppo BDP-83?

Hello, I'm trying to think about getting an Oppo Blu Ray player (Either the BDP-80 or BDP-83) and I had some thoughs about trading in my 80GB (Older generation) playstation 3. The only thing holding me back is God of War 3, a game I really have been wanting to play since the end of God of War 2 (about 2007). I have about 17 games, including the Rock Band insturments and games (1,2 and the beatles) and only have been playing Modern Warfare 2 recently, and two controllers (however one is with a buggy left analog stick, otherwise works fine with shooters). I have heard many great things about Oppo and that it's a much better blu ray player especially for my needs (see my equipment list below), but should I save up or just trade it in to get it? I'm not setting things in stone, but I like some ideas.

If you use it for gaming then that pretty much answers your question. Besides it makes a great Blu-ray player.

How about keeping the PS3 until you play GoW3, then trading it off if you really don't want to use it as a gaming console. Remember (whether you think it will flop or not), 3-D capable products are coming out this year, and the PS3 can apparently play this content via an update.

I am in a similar situation as you. My opinion, save up and get the Oppo for blu-ray, keep the PS3 for games. If you weren't a gamer and only used the PS3 for blu-rays, I would say no brainer to trading it. But the PS3 has some great games coming in the very near future, so I think the better way to go is to keep it and save up. From what I've been told, the Oppo excels at upconversion and has greater audio capabilities, but 1080p over HDMI is a negligible improvement at best compared to the PS3.

Good point. If the PS3 offered subtitle placement (subtitles in cinemascope foreign films can be in the black bar, and cuts it out) and multichannel analog outputs (Not in the mood for a new receiver), I would still want to keep the ps3 without a second though. Then again I could wait and save, and still have a game console, for maybe if others want to play (some people are discouraging me selling my PS3).

I will be getting the Oppo BDP-83 later this year for the reasons you mentioned. I also have an XBox360, but there are exclusives on the PS3 that I want. That is why I recommend doing both if you can swing it. Just my opinion and what I plan on doing.

I would trade my PS3 for an Oppo in a heartbeat...... If my other one was still alive, I'd even do a "2 for 1"

I'll be thinking about, I may end up keeping it.

P.S. are you planning on going for the a projector and considering the CIH method with a cinemascope screen, I could give you a few tips.

Initially it will be a 16x9 screen. I'd love to have a fixed cinemascope screen (I'll be getting the Panny AE4000), but it's just not going to work in my living room. I'll be installing a retractable screen above my LCD TV. PS3 will continue to do the heavy lifting for the time being, as my next goal is to upgrade my receiver. After that, Oppo BDP-83 is in my sights.

Considering the size of the room, I can imagine that can be difficult for a cinemascope screen. The room I'm using us actually about a few inches ahead of 12 feet, which technically uses the whole wall's width. I could take advantage of the height of the screen, but that wouldn't allow me to use my larger JBL stereo speakers, and my projector's throw lens distance is long anyway, so I was really happy that looking a bit online can give me the CIH home theater I didn't though about.

Having owned the PS3 for nearly three years and the Oppo for nearly three months, I believe the only advantage of the Oppo is the analog output audio performance. The PS3 has flawlessly played DVDs that froze on the Oppo.

dude honestly, the PS3 is the BEST blu ray player, is has fast processor, and you dont have to worry about buying a new one when new shit comes out. Sony will just release a firmware update. In addition its a gaming console, IMO the PS3 is far more superior than all the blu ray players on the market, its only down fall is its not region free but i bet with some hack you could make it.

You said you have an older ps3. I'm fairly positive the older models don't support the new DTS-HD and Dolby HD formats. The new slim ps3 does. Also, i'm sure the Oppo does all audio formats. But I am a huge fan of my ps3 and I don't think it's worth getting rid of if you don't have to. Also, the ps3 does Netflix streaming, you can get online, rent movies, download updates easily. The Oppo is supposed to be a great player but DO NOT GIVE UP YOUR PS3.

The old ones do support DTS HD MA and DolbyTrue HD, they can't bitstream, but they do decode internally.

If you have the older PS3 keep it. It is one of the few that can play SACD's and you can also add Linux programing to it as well. It should be backwards compatible if you have the one that came with "Metal Gear Solid". Honestly, if anything were to happen to my PS3 now I would die because I don't want a slim because it is lesser of a machine. Storage space is great, but I like more of the multiple opinions that I have. I only bought this because of GOW 3. At the time, when I purchased my PS3 I picked up GOW 1&2. I was amazed at what it could do and come Tuesday it is on with GOW3.

In the case of the Oppo, I purchased that one because I wanted a great standalone player. The Oppo is the Universal BD player and the upconversion surpasses the PS3 in every aspect. If anyone would like to question me on that; I have this to say" if you have dvd collection with older movies ie "The Killer", "Pulp Ficition", "Jackie Brown" or any other title, the Oppo kills the PS3. The Oppo displays the HD audio on the Display of the player where the PS3 displays it when you hit select if you have a fat and your receiver if you have a slim.

I'm not knocking the PS3, but the Oppo is just a smooth BD player and when Oppo delivers it you, you will never think about returning that product. I have no problems playing in Blu's on my Oppo. If you are into strict movie watching the Oppo is the player, but if you want to multi-task then the PS3 is the way to go.

I really hope that helps!

Given the unreliable hardware of the fat PS3s, I would trade one in for an Oppo without even blinking.

I have a launch day 60GB and I've never had a single problem. I'd take it over ANY standalone out there...period. The best standalone players can produce a slightly better image when upconverting DVD's, but it is just that...slightly better. Unless you have an older receiver that can't handle PCM over HDMI then the PS3 is the best way to go IMO. Its fast, reliable, and easily updated.

Just a few weeks ago I disconnected my Sony S350 that I had in the bedroom and replaced it with a 40GB PS3. The S350 is good, but its not nearly as fast and like all standalones it doesn't playback .MKV files unless they are converted. With the PS3 you can burn a .MKV file without re-encoding it and it plays them just fine. They only need to be muxed into a new container which takes a good two minutes or less on a reasonably fast computer.

And of course as previously stated...there are game exclusives. I play my Xbox 360 more, but I enjoy my PS3 the most for the better exclusives that Sony offers. Metal Gear, Uncharted, Heavy Rain, God of War...I mean its only getting better year after year.
