United Kingdom The Island (Dreamworks) on Blu-ray in Europe

Warner has released "The Island" on Blu-ray in Europe. Just watched it, image and audio are very good (1080p, VC-1, 2.40:1; English, German, French, Italian and Spanish language tracks in DD 5.1 @ 640 kbps). The disc is code-free - I watched it on my U.S. Panny which does enforce regional coding and it played fine.

This is good news since an eventual U.S. release would be an HD-DVD exclusive (Dreamworks). It shows that some Paramount/Dreamworks titles will also be available on Blu-ray in the future (e.g. Flags of Our Fathers was also released by Warner on Blu-ray in Europe so it will continue to be available on Blu-ray, too, even if the Paramount U.S. Blu-ray release should be discontinued).

No, it was the version for the German speaking market. However, the discs are identical, only the languages on the covers are different. If you want the English language cover you will have to go for the UK version.

And the Flags of our fathers release in Europe was better than the paramount one in the US! (it has 5.1 PCM where US version only had DD 5.1)

I just threw Island and Lucky Number Slevin into a shopping cart, on Amazon.co.uk, and the price came out to be around 50 pounds... a currency converter tells me this is around 108 USD? Is that right?

Unfortunately, it probably is correct. The pound is just over double the value of the dollar. A steep price for only two movies, but they are great movies! Let me know what you do... Good luck!

Hi You can get them both cheaper from WWW.sendit.com
The price for both films is £32.78 + postage.
better than £51.00 from Amazon.

Dave.

I got my copy from sendit.com, and like the above post it was only about 18 pounds. It only took 7 days to get to me. The cover has only english writing on it. The case is a little thicker than the US Blu-ray cases.

I was just on sendit.com and it says it's Region 2. Did I miss something?

Are you in the u.k?, I would make sure about "Lucky Number Slevin" being "all region" if your in the U.S. before importing. The Island is "all region" though. Amazon can be a bit up in the air on these things.

I just got my copy of "The Island" about two weeks ago from sendit.com and i did say region 2 (which is not a region for Blu-ray) and I think there was some warning about the ship to address is not conpatable with this disc. I belive all WB disc are region ABC.

I haven't had any problems playing it in my US PS3 or Sony BDP-S1.

Default The European version of The Island is a Region 2 Blu-Ray

The Island European Blu-Ray is Region 2 it will not play in an American Blu-Ray player. The website Sendit.com when I clicked to add The Island to my basket said it would not work in my Region. So how is everyone in the States viewing these Region 2 movies?

It says region 2. But actually is "all region". I know this because I have it, and it works fine in my U.S. PS3.

Thanks, I love this movie, but geez... here I go again... I just told myself last week after my last BD spree that I'm not going to buy any for a while. I think there should be a blurb on Wikipedia under "Addiction" that points to blu-ray as an example.

There is no region 2 for Blu-ray. There are regions A, B and C.

Yes, SendIt.com does warn you, but the warnings are wrong. I've informed them, and they are planning an update to handle the specific Blu-ray regions.

Basically, all catalog titles should be region ABC (all regions). The Island is one, and you can see the UK version is available here from HDAddicts.com, which are in western Canada.
