Default Nordic (DK, S, SF, NO) Blu-ray releases are a joke!

Sony, Disney, Warner - you name it, its all bad!

I am a faithful Play.com customer and always got UK releases, but a quick look in the store was enough to make me cry ):

All releases lag PCM, but ALL feature DTS HD MA and lossy DD.
Now, I would prefer compressed lossless music over PCM if my bloody PS3 could output it.

All nordic cases are _naturally ):_ labeled in the respective languages with poor, poor descriptions of video and audio contents.

Simply says DD, DTS HD and lists extras.

Now, it seems some of them have been altered with new menus in nordic languages? WTF is that? just simple, ugly, still picture menus.

and my favourite part ^^, I couldnt miss the post on the forum about high prices on play.com for Blu-Rays, but in Denmark my loves, the discs are considerably more expensive than play.com - we are close to the 30 british pounds / disc.

This is pathetic.

..correct me if I am wrong, but my PS3 here in the states can internally decode Dolby TrueHD into a PCM signal and send as Linear PCM...can your PS3 not? I would think it does. (or are you speaking on DTS-HD Master?)

...also, can you not buy blurays from other regions??

Yes love (:

I was talking about the DTS MA

As stated, I buy my movies from play.com, and they are perfect.

I was merely concerned about the situation in Denmark in this War. I must say, if I was only able to choose between HD-DVD and Blu Ray in a danish retail store - I would go with HD-DVD, really.

Its so sad, no wonder HD-DVD got a lead in Denmark.

Blu Ray are extremely, insanely overpriced in Denmark, just as the PS3 - paid 480 english pounds for it!
AND THEY ARE INFERIOR!

NOT ONLY did I have to pay this insane amount of money for a downgraded ps3 (compared to the US one), I would - if I diddnt know how to order movies online, have to pay 30 english pounds for lesser nordic blu ray releases.

pathetic.

You should be aware of that what you called the "downgraded ps3" actually is the Sony's main PS3 model. The model that was released in Japan and the US was a temporary solution, since they were not ready with the software emulation of PS/PS2. This temporary is now out of production.

I'm surprised that you say that HD DVD got a lead in Denmark. Just the other day it was announced that Blu-ray had a 73% marketshare out side the US during the first half of 2007, and axelmusic.dk reports 83% Blu-ray for the last week and 67 % Blu-ray for the year 2007.

But I do agree with you that the prices are increadable high in the Nordic countries...

AFAIK, HD-DVD got a lead, not a major, but a lead in Denmark, despite the fact that the most popular video/gaming stores exclusively sell Blu Ray.

I live in Denmark too, AND THIS IS NOT TRUE. This thread is mostly FUD!!

All Disney and SONY titles has PCM.

I own, Chicken Little, Layer Cake, Casino Royal, both Pirates and many more.

And they ALL have PCM.

The only titles that have DTS HD MA is the titles from FOX, and that's the same in the US.

Warner doesn't release with PCM, until now. Actually Flags of our Fathers has PCM i Denmark and only Dolby Digital "over there".

And from what I know, Denmark is actually one of the european countries where Blu-ray has a clear lead.

This is incorrect, as a retailer i know that Blu-ray have larger sales here in Denmark.

Besides this our releases aren't as bad as you say! They are expensive yes, but technically there is only a few that are worse than the US version, those being mostly warner releases.

Coverart aren't that poor made as you said, i don't know what more you expect. It lists extras, what format they are in and what sound format. Same for the movie.

HD-DVD are rarely seen in shops in denmark, blu-ray is covering the shelves in several stores, which HD-DVD isn't even shown

Fellow danes.

Really - please.

1) As I said very clearly - despite the fact that FONA and Blockbuster sell Blu-Ray exclusively, HD-DVD got the lead in Denmark.

Please check out the leading danish gaming site "dailyrush.dk" for details in my posts etc.

2) Just to make it clear, I am a bluray supporter, and you can accept what I say or take it as FUD, I dont care.

3) The danish inserts in the cases are a joke, and even worse than the translated DVD-ones.

4) Go to the largest FONA in Denmark (FONA2k på strøget), and you wil lsee that not a SINGLE RELEASE features PCM WHATSOEVER. All cases boast DTS MA on the front of the insert.

5) My guess is that HD-DVD got the lead, because imo any blu-ray watcher with respect for himself buys his movies overseas atm.

6) As you agree, the prices are lame.

WHY, WHY cant this war just end, and WHY cant Denmark and other nordic countries be treated equally? - we got the most expensive ps3 and most expensive movies in the world. I have asked the distributor, and they claim they earn the same amount of money as when they sell regular DVD's - meaning the blu-ray movies are sold to the stores for an insanely high amount of money putting the blame on the studios selling them.

Its outrageous.

Play.com ftw

I'm not familiar with the Danish retail laws. Are retailers allowed to sell video discs at a discount from the Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP)? Here in the US there are no restrictions on prices and the retailers compete on price (in addition to other things such as service and convenience).

Thanks

Play.com ftw
Since when can we trust a gaming site to tell us something about movies? - i say again, as a retailer of movies i know what has sold the most (distributors like to talk about it when they come for a chat) and it is not HD-DVD.

The reason for FONA having titles with DD 5.1 or DTS-HD MA is because they most likely are only selling Warner and fox titles (Warner & SF-Film). Warner titles are way cheaper when stocking up and can be sold at a lower price. but i can tell you that roughly after 'moms' a store earns 50 dkk from a movie that retails at 279,95 dkk.

About the inlays? - It doesn't give us much details, but it shows some movies etc. on blu-ray and are meant for new users of blu-ray to make them buy more.
Several UK titles only have a "This disc might need firmware upgraded on your player" inlay. Why do you even care? hopefully you are buying the disc for the disc and not the inlay.

Almost all sony and disney titles have PCM, and even a few warner titles aswell.

And just a sidenote:
What's so bad about DTS-HD MA?!?!?!?

btw. just read the thread through on dailyrush, and no facts are stated there. Axelmusic stats does NOT count as axelmusic does overprices on blu and the fact that it is only one retailer.

In any case, it doesn't sound like you own many Blu-ray's from Disney and SONY. If own any of there movies you will know, that every movie from Disney and SONY has PCM, that's just the way it is Many Disney movies even has 24-bit 48kHz PCM, take both Pirates movies as an example

4) Go to the largest FONA in Denmark (FONA2k på strøget), and you wil lsee that not a SINGLE RELEASE features PCM WHATSOEVER. All cases boast DTS MA on the front of the insert. FOX uses DTS MA, so FONA must only have FOX titles. The Master codec is loss-less, and the bit-rate is nearly as high as the original PCM track, and it is the only codec, that's always encodec in 24-bit. I know it can't be fully decodec yet, but is going to be possible very soon with new players, receivers..... There is nothing wrong with DTS-MA.

The Blu-ray exclusive studios will ALWAYS (99.5% of the time) provide you with a loss-less codec either PCM from SONY and Disney, DTS-MA from FOX and PCM from Lionsgate.

The only company that's behind is Warner. They have released a lot of titles with Dolby Digital. These movies has Dolby Digital Plus on the HD-DVD version, but many times it's only encoded with a bit-rate of 640kbps, so it sounds the same as the Blu-ray counterpart.

Try to look at HD-DVD and Universal most of there titles only have a lossy Dolby Digital Plus codec. They have something to complain about.

5) My guess is that HD-DVD got the lead, because imo any blu-ray watcher with respect for himself buys his movies overseas atm.

Actually I buy my movies in my local Blockbuster and a lot of other people does too. They constantly expand there Blu-ray selection. If Blu-ray didn't sell, they wouldn't allow it to take up so much shelf space.

To the OP: I have an offer for you (just like I offered to help a friend I met on this board from Germany).

I live in Chicago and I will be more than willing to help you get cheaper Blu-Ray discs to Denmark. If you are interested in my offer email me at stock13@hotmail.com.

By the way, just so you don't think that this post is a scam I am on the review panel at DVDTALK (as my avatar suggests) and use exactly the same name and avatar at TALK. Look up the international forum as that is where I contribute the most.

Ciao,
Pro-B
