As the title suggests what's the diff? I know Sherlock holmes was a iron pack. So what's the Diff between the 2?

steel book is the case itself a iron pack is a slip cover that goes over a standard blu ray case.

Hmmm I thought so it's weird cos Sherlock holmes was advertised as a iron pack and it's a steelbook. Yet my inglorius basterds was advertised as a steelbook and is a iron cover.... WTF?

wrong, a iron pack is much like a steelbook but is made by a different cover and has a different kind of spine. A star metalpack is also similiar but also has a different spine (this is what the Aussie release of Sherlock Holmes is). Quality wise people on this forum tend to say steelbook > ironpack > star metalpack. Personally I hav never owned a ironpack but the star metalpack is only slighly less nice as a steelbook as I minorly prefer the spines of stelbooks (but only just).

From what I've seen in stores we mainly have steelbooks, there's also the metallic slipcase ones for Inglourious Basterds and Fast and Furious though I wouldn't have a clue that they're called.

Yep, basically four types. I will try and list all the Aussie releases for each that I can recall):

  • SteelBook: (Paranormal Activity, Knowing, Transporter 3, 2012, Michael Jackson's 'This Is It' and the upcoming Edge of Darkness)
  • Iron Pack: (no Australian releases)
  • Star Metalpack: (Sherlock Holmes)
  • Steel Tin/Steel Case: (Fast and the Furious pack, Inglorious Basterds, Terminator 2, The Dark Knight, Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, Smokin' Aces Double Pack)

Main differences as Suntory has pointed out are the spines though other design elements do differ. The SteelBook design is trademarked so more collectable. It also has IMHO a better design stemming from the research they did in creating the SteelBook design (see Scanavo web site for info). I can't say as to the quality of the metal used in each, but my local JB actually had about 6 Sherlock Holmes that had been either compressed or caved in due to the thin nature of the metal. I can't say I've ever seen a SteelBook like that before (not to that degree).
