Default How long does it take for a plasma to burn in an image?

So im new to this plasma bit and i was working on a friends computer that i have connected to the TV, walked away for 10-15min and when i came back some of the setup was stuck on the screen. It seems to be going away now but i couldnt believe after such a short time it had retained the image???

That's just image retention. All plasma's get that. Most have a scrolling bar or the like which works against IR. Burn in is when you cannot get the image to go away no matter what. Just make sure not to leave an image on the screen for a long time (good advice for any hdtv) and run the Anti-IR once in awhile.

It was kind of a pain watching the opening ceremonies of the olympics with that big bright nbc olympics logo on my screen!

It's worse if you're running in vivid mode, and/or have contrast cranked.

The user manual for my Samsung PS50B850 (50" '09 plasma model) warns against leaving a static image on for more than two hours. Short term image retention is something you'll have to live with if you choose plasma, but in my opinion the image quality and "smoothness" more than makes up for this minor defect of the technology.

Burn-in is nasty though. My wife's been playing Dragon Age a lot during the daytime while I'm at work (we've got an 8 month old kid she's tending to), and there's been some borderline burn-in issues I've had to spend quite some time removing with the TVs anti-burn-in system (rolling greyscale waves), specifically traces of the user interface (character portrait borders).

Even with the image retention issues and my small but constant fear of burn in, I wouldn't trade my plasma for a LED-LCD or an LCD screen. I'm that happy with it.

Very true, and unfortunately some plasmas are still worse about this than others. I've only ever noticed very minor IR with mine, but I've seen others where I couldn't believe how fast an image got 'stuck' on the screen.

maybe its just me but my TV seems to get IR very fast. It was a display model so maybe that has something to do with it? Is there anything i can do to help this a bit?

Also it seems i have one stupid pixel that is flickering between being stuck red and not

I owned a Panasonic S1, and when it was brand new, IR used to take a while to kick in. But it also took a while to go away. However, a couple of weeks into use, IR would kick in in as little as 1 minute. So If I was at the desktop (PC), and the clocked said 7:30pm, and then switch to a 21:9 (aspect) movie, I would see the numbers 7:30pm for a while in the black bars. Not 7:2#, I would actually see 7:30pm clearly. Meaning IR happen in the time frame that those numbers stayed static.

Crazy to think about it, but that's just how plasma works. But the thing is, motion is so damn smooth, despite that problem. Kinda hard to believe. It's so smooth it's just unfair to compare it to a 60hz LCD. It's like night and day difference.

I have a 42" Panasonic in the bedroom and I notice that it only takes a few minutes (maybe less than 10 minutes) before I could see traces of IR. On my Kuro however, I watch a lot of soccer with static images on for 45 minutes (half of the match) at a time and not even a hint of IR. For my Panny I usually run the anti-IR scrolling bar to get rid of the IR.

ok well ive never owned a plasma before and just wanted to make sure nothing was wrong. I ran the Anti IR scrolling bar thing and my troublesome pixel seemed to fix itself as well. The IR has always gone away real fast but i was just suprised how fast it came on.

Makes me a bit concerned cause i was gonna get a HTPC

I have a Pioneer Kuro too, and have never had any serious IR or even worse Burn-ins.
I think the Kuros are quite immune, and I don't worry about it at all.

Well, actually I used the 54" S1 as a monitor for a few weeks. It wasn't that fun. I had to remove my wallpaper, just to prevent it from being stuck on people's faces. lol.
Here's part 1 of my review, feel free to check it out: Part 1/3
The remaining parts are in my channel.

So true. Plasma PQ is so stunning that I'll take image retention any and every day as it always goes away. My Plasma's a keeper.

We have several NEC plasmas (now three years old?) that we use to view mostly stationary information at our acoustics lab, and even with the white "wiper bar" activated it took less than a month to burn the images into the screens.

I'm not sure what the problem could be? Hmmm, remind me not to use my plasma as a computer monitor.

I get SOME IR in as little as 5 seconds. But it's something I have to go out of my way to notice. For example, leave a dvd menu screen on for 5 seconds, and then switch to a different input that is not in use. From really close up to the tv, in my dim room, on the black screen I can see a little IR after just 5 seconds. I was amazed when I discovered this. 5 seconds? Like holy crap.

It's not something I can see during normal viewing though or even from just farther back, even if I tried.

I forgot to mention that it wasn't my idea to use plasmas for those functions! As my dad used to say, "I guess next time they'll know better."
