I thinking about upgrading my hard drive and then I thought about just buying a new PS3. I currently have a PS3 FAT and I'm afraid it will eventually die on me and I know the game save files I want to keep will not be able to transfer over. Should I just upgrade the hard drive or buy a new PS3. OR BOTH!

My PS3 is a launch day model and it's working fine - though I do notice the fan kicking in earlier than it used to.
I've been thinking about changing to a Slim too, partly for the quieter fan, partly for the design and partly (geek, geek, geek) because it outputs HD audio to my amp in such a way that the amp would display the fact that it's receiving HD audio!! If money isn't too much of a worry I'd say go for the Slim and transfer everything over ![]() |

Get a 2nd PS3. Also instead of upgrading the others drive just get a external. My reasons for this suggestion is cause my 60g needed a repair last summer. Now it just went out on me again. I got a external for xmas so i've got my data. I am just going to get a new one and fix my 60g since i'm on a budget when possible. That way my 60g will just have limited use.

Wait, can you run demo's and all that off an external HDD now? Say for example I want to DL the PSN+ 1 hour trial of Mass Effect 2, can I run that from an external HDD? If so, what kind can I buy. I'm on a fat PS3 as well and it is maxed out and I'd rather not keep deleting demo's, etc I don't want to upgrade the internal HDD either for similar fear.

It can't that i know of i have not tried. I don't think it will do that. Though if your set on upgrading the current hdd...i'd say just get the external too and once your done return it for the $ after you swapped in larger drive. Whichever works for you though.

If I were in your shoes, I'd probably just upgrade the harddrive...unless you have reason to suspect your PS3 is starting to show signs of failure. Otherwise, you may be wasting $.
I too have a 60gig launch, no issues yet. The machine has run flawlessly since I bought it. |

I sold my PS3 phat recently for $230 recently on craigslist. And then gave my sister the money for her new PS3 slim. I'm very happy with the exchange since I don't have any use for the PS1/2 games at all.
If you can sell your PS3 for a good price and don't care about PS1/2 games, then go for the new slim model. You can get a slim for $250 on Amazon with $50 credit. Otherwise, keep the phat... |

Thanks guy...think I'm going to keep my fat till it dies. I'm always thinking about upgrading but I should really start saving my money.

I'd just upgrade the hard drive. That's what I did with mine. It sucks that I lost my Demon Souls save (I really, really don't want to start that over...) but it's more than worth it rather than spending $300 on a new system.

![]() I've never heard of Bioware/Ea games not transferring but you can transfer data from PS3 to PS3 with an external drive. Just have to convert your external to Fat32. If you buy a new PS3 you would transfer it from one to the other and when you do that it's completely gone from the old system. At least with the external you have a back up. Still don't know about the Bioware thing though ![]() Last edited by Denoku; 02-04-2011 at 08:05 AM. |

Some games have copy-protected saves. IMO, you should just buy a new PS3 now because backing-up your files only lets you copy them back to the same PS3, I believe. If not, then I still recommend buying a new PS3 now (and maybe a bigger HDD for the slim).
