Thanks Anurag1700
Much appreciated. Can you please comment on REM 5.1 DTS HD MA vs YRF 5.1 DTS HD MA ! I'm an audiophile. Invested in onkyo rz900 monster. Got a great deal for this originally priced $1600. I've found REM dts hd ma to be more surrounding, clearer and enveloping experience. This is equalled only by DOLBY ATMOS indian BRDs or dolby trueHD advanced 96k upsampling by YRF & shemaroo brds. |

The reason I said i dont care much about this era of movies is that the 5.1 audio was still in evolving stage back then. Movies did not used to get mixed as aggressively and as 'in your face' as they get mixed these days. For e.g. I would care a lot for rab ne banadi jodi or Jab tak hai jaan because they have very modern amplified sound mix which reaches you from all directions and all frequencies no matter what. However Mohabbatein's was a much more laid back but very well done mix for its time. To give you the example of tweaking, i never liked the thing YRF did with DDLJ by upmixing it to 5.1 and never retaining its original 2.0 or 4.0 channel audio. Even REM didnt have that. I still have a bootleg DDLJ DVD from 1998 which has that track and I am telling you that track has the originally intended emotional feel of the movie. All other tracks no matter how lossless/remastered/5.1/DTS sound completely dead to me. Last edited by Anurag1700; 03-04-2016 at 08:17 PM. |

I'm unable to distinguish between the REM & YRF screenshots - they look virtually identical to my untrained eyes - but I've also ordered the REM BRD - so, will check it out for myself......

![]() I had a Onkyo HT900thx home-theatre-in-the-box. Fortunately, the receiver broke donw. ![]() This is the best HT-in-the-box with powerful enough woofer and all 7 thx certified speakers. My price range was get a $500-$600 denon or pioneer receiver and add a reference range real subwoofer (Klipsch 300 watts). But last christmas 2015, onkyo listed their brand new monster RZ900 (NOT the RZ800 wihtout "Toroidal Transformer" mind you!) for $1099 down from $1499 only for a week. I said forget buying good center channel or powerful klipsch 300 watts subwoofer for $250. Now that I have decent investment in "TrueHD advance 96k" BRDs ($20 each) in DEDH ISHQIYA, CHANDNI, Jagjit singh in SARFAROSH & MADRAS CAFE, I better have a$$ kicking receiver and went all out. This is the only way Bollywood fans of 1990s decade can enjoy the songs as this decade went "lossless" 5.1 multichannel sound with some of the extremely melodious songs. Next thing I know, Relience Mediaworks & Shemaroo authored BRDs steps up a notch! goes DOLBY ATMOS with MARY KOM and PHANTOM ![]() and my setup is only 7.1 and ATMOS is down graded to TrueHD 7.1. It still ![]() Next investment: Klipsch Ref 64ii center channel, Klipsch Floor Standing front speakers pair & 2nd Klipsch 300W subwoofer. That will require massive investment even for "open box" reference items. It will be a while. All because of the monster called Onkyo RX900 ![]() |

Thanks a ton for these and the other set on the other threads. I am no expert or technical-headed person, hence I can not pick out too many differences in the comparative shots except for the fact that the REM version has a better contrast rendition among the two. Film-like and appealing. There does not seem to be any boost occurring in those REM screenies. If you remember, back in the DVD days, REM had dished out some brilliant DVDs of the movies that received mediocre transfers by Indian studios. Some noteworthy examples are Taal, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (although REM was poor compared to the DEi/Pathfinder editions, it sure is miles better than the horrid Shemaroo and Eros version.), King Uncle, Kabhi Kabhie and of course, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham.
Even though they usually based their transfers on the masters prepared by Indian studios, they took care of the contrast and colors making it a more authentic and pleasing experience. They maintained a progressive encoding as well. And these factors brought great results. Good to see that they have their torch lighting even to date. Keep it up, REM. |

The point is that if both companies used the same master , then YRF did an inferior job and that is what we are looking at. The best available version today of the film is from REM. |

Now I need to look hard for DDLJ original Dolby SR mix. RANGEELA DEI DVD had some of the most aggressive 5.1 DD mixes back in the days. I always wonder YRF having their own studio and sound mixing studio mini theatre wouldn't give a true, prestine, puncy, original, audio transfer to their marquee home productions in DDLJ, MOHABBATEIN, DARR. Talking about 'in your face', Bollywood sound effects editing and mixing may have matured from 2000 to 2004 as VEER ZAARA and KHAKHEE had some of that hollywoodish aggressiveness in DTS. COMPANY and DEVDAS of 2002 had some sick 'in your face' punchy mixes of their era. Even these two sound dated now. Just few thoughts. |

For Veer zaara however, though the music, score, orchestra and vocals were very lively and aggressive, there was a problem with its dialogue mixes. The sync sound recording of dialogues was not well done. hence it did not gel well with the overtly alive score during dialogue scenes. In at least couple scenes, dialogue is hard to make out and center channel really struggles to bring up the muffled recoording. example- 1) Go to the bridge crosssing scene at the river. When Veer replies to zaara on teh question aap kitni baar meri jaan bachayenge, see how badly his response was recorded and the digitised accompanying music made it even worse. 2) Go to first prison scene when veer opens his mouth and starts speaking. Let me know if anyone can make out when he says 'Main aaj bhi apne haathon ki tapish aur khoon ki .... jab main apne helicopter ko pahadon ke beech le jaya karta tha' . I get the idea. its not important but certainly u cant make it inaudible for that reason. |

Onkyo TX RZ900 ![]() !! Notice that white round thing inside !! ![]() Its the "toroidal transformer." literally occupies front to middle 1/3rd of AVR area inside. Starts from that "THX" logo in front just after display panel ends inside. Never seen any beast like that in other mid-range AVRs so far. High-end $3500 & up AVRs definitely have this kind of stuff. This "Toroidal transformer" is massive and makes this AVR heavy as elephant. A reason why I have it sitting on the floor. I'm sure its lesser twin ONKYO TX RZ800 is considerably lighter minus this transformer. Just guessing btw. This gets warm enough but never hot or even heats up. Especially when I run Dolby Atmos (PHANTOM) or 7.1 trueHD Adv 96k Upsampling (MADRAS CAFE) and 5.1 TrueHD Adv 96K Upsampling (DEDH ISHQIYA and BOMBAY VELVET) Why these 4 BRDs I enjoyed the most by far? PHANTOM: The way Atmos fills the room. You realize 7.1 set up is more than enoug despite whatever true Audiophiles say regarding 11.1 setup and spending $5000 just for the AVR alone. MADRAS CAFE:Very aggressive, lively, punchy 7.1 TrueHD Adv. 96K. Despite that horrendrous Shemaroo Watermark. Every fired bullet to explosion leaves its mark in your room. ![]() DEDH ISHQIYA: Excellent classical music filled soundtrack. Never enjoyed more listening to urdu poetry and hindustani classicals (especially that thumri Madhuri is dancing to) from lost era more. Absolute must have IMO despite shemaroo's pathetic watermark. ![]() BOMBAY VELVET: Classy, Jazzy, must have 5.1 TrueHD Adv. 96k mix. A unique, intoxicating, lively soundtrack. You literally feel you are in the jazz concert. Honorary mention DETECTIVE BYOMKESH BAKSHY I never reviewed this AVR because of the cheaper speakers. Here are some comments left by the customers so far! ![]() ![]() The rest of the bare minimum cheap setup! My really cheap 21+ inch vizio HDTV. Two BR players. Bollywood DVDs I end up playing two at a time to get the best possible PQ from one and best possible AQ from another. ![]() And previous leftover HT-in-the-box Onkyo THX certified Center Channel. 2 x front channels look exactly like this. 4 x rear channels looks are slightly smaller THX certified versions. Plus Klipsch 300 watts subwoofer. Notice on the screen display: "Input" says "Dolby Atmos / TrueHD", "Output" says "Dolby Atmos 7.1 Ch" (reduced as 11.1 Atmos setup is unavailable) ![]() |
