I rented it last night after reading the book about a week ago. The film doesn’t do a great job explaining anything at first. My husband watched it with me and I could follow everything cause I had just read the book; he was totally lost, not understanding why Margaret was a mess. I was also surprised how much it deviated from the book. There were so many details not touched on in the movie. For example, the book does a lot of flashbacks to her youth and family, thus really explaining why she’s such a mess. I think her family was mentioned once in the movie, briefly.
Anyways, I enjoyed it, even being different from the book. I love Tokyo, vacationed there twice and had my third trip cancelled by the pandemic - so it was good to revisit it in this movie. I’d recommend it. Interesting story. |

i’m not familiar with the source material.
from the title and the cover, you think it me be an erotic thriller but drenched in neon.... maybe looking like only god forgives. but it really reminds me more of last life in the universe. more contemplative drama than erotic fantasy, but still worth checking out. i guess the eleven year olds who listen to mr skin would be disappointed. |

I want to read the book and see the movie, but unfortunately neither are available to me. It must be some distribution disagreement because the book is in Kobo's catalogue in USA, just not available to Canadian customers. And the movie isn't on Microsoft movies in Canada either.
Oh well, eventually... |

I gave this a rent, here are my thoughts.
The film is about a young woman trying to process her issues by numbing herself out in a world of booze and sex in a land far away. Daddario is surprisingly convincing as the troubled American woman in Tokyo trying to run away from herself. It's like something in between 'Into the Wild' and 'Nymphomaniac'. Apparently it was significantly trimmed down in an effort to make it more palatable to mainstream audiences. Maybe they were hoping they could edit it into something more like 'Lost In Translation'? I dunno. It definitely felt like it could have been longer and gotten deeper into its characters or even explored its love hotel setting more than it did. It's barely over 90 minutes, and everything that is there is fine, but it feels like it takes the shortcut on some of the desperation it is trying to achieve. Makes me want to read the book more. |
