Arrow GET LOW Review Thread (Use Spoiler Tags)

This movie is a must see for me

I don’t know what to make of this trailer for Get Low. It starts off looking like a quirky comedy about an old man (Robert Duvall) wanting a funeral party while he’s still alive. But as the trailer progresses, the tone gets increasingly darker. In her review from the Toronto Film Festival, Monika said the movie was, “undeniably smart, funny, and heart-wrenching piece.” Scott Weinberg over at Cinematical also saw the flick at TIFF and said the film was, “an excellent little dramatic piece that’s awash in humanity, warmth, insight, and wit.” The Playlist’s Luke Gorham said it was, “crowd-pleasing and solid, if ultimately unexceptional film.“ I’m certainly interested in seeing it and it looks like Duvall is going to turn in another great performance. However, he does remind me of the SNL sketch where he played a character on a game show called, “Who’s More Grizzled?” Sadly, I couldn’t find the video but here’s the transcript.

Get Low hits theaters on July 30th.

Click over to Yahoo! Movies to see the trailer in HD.

Here’s the official synopsis for Get Low:
For years, townsfolk have been terrified of the backwoods recluse known as Felix Bush. People say he’s done all manner of unspeakable things — that he’s killed in cold blood; that he’s in league with the Devil; that he has strange powers — and they avoid him like the plague. Then, one day, Felix rides to town with a shotgun and a wad of cash, saying he wants to buy a funeral. It’s not your usual funeral for the dead Felix wants. On the contrary, he wants a ‘living funeral,’ in which anyone who ever had heard a story about him will come to tell it, while he takes it all in. Sensing a big payday in the offing, fast-talking funeral home owner Frank Quinn enlists his gentlemanly young apprentice, Buddy Robinson to win over Felix’s business. Buddy is no stranger to Felix’s dark reputation, but what he discovers is that behind Felix’s surreal plan lies a very real and long-held secret that must get out. As the funeral approaches, the mystery - which involves the widow Maddie Darrow, the only person in town who ever got close to Felix, and the Illinois preacher Charlie Jackson who refuses to speak at his former friend’s funeral - only deepens. But on the big day, Felix is in no mood to listen to other people spinning made-up anecdotes about him. This time, he’s the one who is going to do the telling about why he has been hiding out in the woods.

Well they definitely have a great cast and from what I read sounds like it could be good. Original Idea though, which is ultimately why I'll give it a view.

Sounds totally strange, and original, and potentially fantastic. Love the cast.

Found this...

The dramatic thriller was penned by the screenwriting team of C. Gaby Mitchell (Blood Diamond) and Chris Provenzano ("Mad Men").

That surely cant hurt.

This looks really interesting. It kind of has a Coen Bros feel to it.

Really want to see this. Judging from the trailer, it has best acting nod for Duvall all over it.

Default Get Low - Starring Robert Duvall and Sissy Spacek!!

! just heard about this film, and so excited to see it. Finally, something totally original and heart felt featuring, IMO, the greatest actor of our time. Can Robert Duvall be any more amazing? While other men have a foot in the grave at his age, he is still cranking out amazing performances. Bill Murray is very interesting in his role as well.

I hope this film doesn't end up like "Stars Fell on Henreitta". I loved that movie, yet it has been completely forgotten, never released on dvd or blu.

This movie looks fantastic. I cannot wait to see it. Lucas Black sure has come a long way since American Gothic (great show, by the way) and his little cameo in The X-Files: Fight The Future.

Don't forget The War and Crazy in Alabama he was another child star I really liked growing up but he pretty much disappeared into obscurity once he got older, until Tokyo Drift than he kind of disappeared again.

For years I thought that he was the voice of Bobby Hill on King of the Hill until I realized Bobby was voiced by a really cute/hot girl.

Just got back from the theater. I cannot express in words how great this movie is. Easily the best of the year so far. I would not be surprised if it gets multiple Academy Award nominations. The acting was fantastic. Robert Duvall has delivered many great performances over his long career, but this might be his best. The rest of the cast was excellent, too. It is both funny and sad (I even teared up at the end). If this movie is playing near you, then by all means, see it.

saw a special screening tonight with the director in the audience (who is a really nice guy and talked a little bit with everyone in attendance personally before the movie)...it is an amazing movie, Murray, Black, and Duvall work really well together...this will be nominated for some Academy Awards...
