Daggers Drawn Over DVDs
How Sony gained an edge in its fierce battle with Microsoft over video formats

Every July, 400 of the most powerful media and tech industry chieftains meet at investment banker Herb Allen's conference in Sun Valley, Idaho, for what are usually convivial discussions of megatrends and megamergers. But this year, Microsoft (MSFT ) Chairman Bill Gates III laid into Sony (SNE ) Chief Executive Howard Stringer, according to two sources, including one who witnessed the exchange in a private room.

Gates argued that Sony's new high-definition DVD standard, called Blu-ray, needed to be changed so it would work smoothly with personal computers running on Microsoft's Windows operating system. Stringer and two lieutenants defended the technology, insisting Blu-ray would work fine in PCs.

Further Evidence of what I said earlier in that it wasnt about Studios picking what and what not, but seeing which format would reign it's dominance on the PC. I mean DVD's are pretty standard now for all forms of large Software, but to increase that beyond 7 gigs, what will become the norm? HD DVD? Blu-Ray? Multiple DVD's?

The Lack of Blu Ray Burning Utilities on PC's is a downfall in itself, however hD DVD's haven't presented a whole lot of options in their Burning Solutions. So the door is still wide open here. But in the end the Studios picking what format, is only a small fraction of what will determine the final winner in this format war.

Lack of burning utilities?
I have Roxio 9, Ulead and Cyberlink - there is also Nero, and Ashampoo.
Not to mention other programs that can "manipulate" and burn BDs

These are the ones I am familiar with.. there may be more.

This is factory Ulead(for VAIO)

This is Roxio 9(I upgraded to this from the "SE" version Sony installed)

PLENTY of burning Utilities for Blu-ray out there.

Oh Sorry What I meant was it wasn't supported through windows. If I had to burn files (normal files) onto a disk you know for backup, using a burning utility that's kind of a pain in the ass, but oh well. And I'm kinda cheap on software, I'll admit it. That's why I use a PC, If I wanted to buy all my software I would have bought an Apple PC.

Call me silly here, but if I won't bloody-well trust the crap programs embedded in windows to burn a $1.20 DVD+R DL.... (and I won't).... I SURE AS HELL ain't going to trust it to burn a $25 BD-R!

You get what you pay for, and for me, the peace of mind I get using Nero is MORE than worth the price of admission.

People who are going to be dropping $25 a pop on media are going to be buying software - PERIOD

Yeah I suppose you're right, I haven't really started doing this at all, and been pondering around the idea, but it seems so expensive to me. In theory I'd be doing it to somehow save money, I think.... (I can't really say I do alot things that save money) But I have the capability to burn, I just haven't used it yet. If I started I would definately be burning onto RE, until R's get cheaper or both.

Thought it was the more recent article pointing out just what particular grudges Sony was bringing to the table (not that it wasn't All Microsoft's Fault, too):

They should make a movie out of it and later on, only release it on Blu-ray.
