def think gloss is better as far as PQ (with the right set) as long as you're in a dark room or there are no reflections bouncing off the screen.

Matt finish is better to me, by far.
I despise plasmas because of the glossy, reflective screen. All my life I had no choice with the old CRT tvs, but now that I do have a choice, a glossy, reflective screen won't be in my house.......... If you don't mind seeing everything reflected in your screen, go glossy.

Honestly, I like the gloss because it's pretty and looks more expensive. Other than that, I notice no real discrepency in performance.

+1000000000000

it produces more vibrant colors compared to matte and better contrast. The principles are the same as printing on matte vs glossy paper. Granted the cons to having a glossy screen is reflection and if you have uncontrollable excessive light behind you then matte would be a better choice.

The National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST) published a tutorial on how to select flat panel displays. One of the topics they addressed is screen reflection issues. Here is an article that talks about viewing environment principles and features the graphic depictions NIST produced that do a great job of illustrating how light reflects off of glossy and "matte" screen types: http://www.cinemaquestinc.com/ive.htm . Just scroll down to the NIST graphics. Anti-reflection screen coatings don't eliminate reflections. They only diffuse the light into a less distinct image or general haze. Such treatments come with their own full time side affects that interfere with the image on the screen in varying degrees.

Each consumer gets to decide which consequences are less objectionable between a glossy or anti-reflective screen type. If the priority is ultimate image fidelity, it's better to control viewing environment conditions than to expect a TV to somehow compensate for conflicting environmental deficiencies or problems.
