Default 3rd gen players this fall?

Ok, Samsung has announced two, the 1400 and the 2400 ... the latter with a good HQV, this might be the one.

Does anyone know about other players supporting the new standards?

What to buy before Christmas?

Thanks!

And given that Samsung 2400 might not meet the new Java/interactivity specs, will any new (ack) third-quarter Sony be meeting post-October requirements?

I'd be quite surprised if the (as yet not officially announced) BDP-S500 didn't meet at least Profile 1.1.

Java interactivity is a small plus. What Blu-ray needs is el-cheapo mass produced Blu-ray players in the $300 range. This is to finally put the axe to HD DVD and end this rediculous format war. It make things too complex for the average consumer.

If you mean 1.1, no, not till next year:
http://blogs.pcworld.com/staffblog/archives/004989.html

I'm definitely buying my first player at Christmas/January, but I'd like the closest model that does (I'll take a firmware patch only if there's no other alternative)--
And wanting to use only one player and still having a huge SD collection makes DVD-upscaling non-negotiable: The 2400 reportedly has the best upscaling for the price (which the 1400 and PS3 reportedly don't), but not sure whether I'll end up having to download some decent compatibility just to get both.

Just to clarify what you've heard.. is that "The 2400 reportedly has the best upscaling for the price (which the 1400 and PS3 reportedly don't)" as in the PS3 does'nt have very good upscaling or plain does'nt??? Either way I'll tell you now.. it's upscaling ability is fantastic for the money let alone as a Blu-ray player.

So far I'm very satisfied with the PS3 DVD upscaling. I have to tell you I'm very picky.
Also if you are upscaling compressed (Bootleg/copied) DVD don't expect anything better.

Well I don't know if you have heard about these new chinese blu-ray players...

They are quietly making it into the news and haven't been posted anywhere on this forum before...

Any BD palyer released after Oct 31 must be BD 1.1 compliant. So it will depend on when the new Samsung players are released to the market. If it is before Oct 31, then there is no REQUIREMENT that they do 1.1. It doesn't mean that they won't however. IMO, Samsung would be stupid not to incorporate 1.1 in their new players.

Shortly after I bought the 1200, Samsung Tech Support responded to me saying that it would be 1.1 compliant (presumably via firmware upgrade). Since then however, we have learned that while the 1200 was originally announced back in Jan as having the Broadcom 7440 chip, it was actually released to the market with the 7411 chip which is not upgradeable to 1.1. When Samsung sent me their reply, they were probably basing the answer on the 7440 chip. Alas, no such possibility in the commercial product now in the market.

Affecting your PS3? Yes. The PS3 has the hardware capability of becoming a Profile 1.1 and BD-Live player. It is not yet one though as the firmware needed to make it happen is not there.

As for your future laptop, that depends on the capability of the graphic card in the laptop. Profile 1.1 players need to be able to decode TWO video streams with the secondary stream starting at 480p and up to 1080p. So for a laptop to be able to do that might be a tall order for now. Aside from the graphic card however, the laptop fulfills the requirement of Profile 1.1 and BD-Live player, assuming that the software is upgraded to perform as such.

terima kasih

I see. the laptop I want support HDCP. So, it's also about the profile. I've heard Profile 1.1 is expected to become mandatory this November? Can I expect a firmware upgrade including this for PS3?
