Which company makes the best standalone Blu-ray players?

I have had two Sony player which I was totally happy with, now using an Oppo 83 and extremely happy with that..

So to answer your question Sony or Oppo.

Had a Sammy 2550 and I exchanged it for the 3600 and I love it.

It has Netflix and Pandora, which I thought that I would use more than I have, but the analog interface to get lossless sound was integral in the love story between it and me. I now have a HDMI compatible receiver and I love it more, if that was even possible.

The interface between user and technology is more logical than most Blu ray players that I have seen, and I am not putting others down. I just think it is very compatible for my needs.

I have a Panasonic and haven't had trouble with any discs playing yet. Many people say the PS3 is also good.

This all depends who you ask. I don't own one but Oppo makes very solid players. I guess you could say this for PS3 as well. I have a Samsung and an Insignia, and both have been working very good. But others seems to have problems with Samsung...so it all depends who you ask.

I absolutely love my Sylvania. I've never once had to update the firmware right out of the box, and it has played every single BD or DVD I've thrown at it without a hitch, even the ones that have given much of the general public a problem.

Anything but a Samsung. 2 friends plus myself all had Samsungs and they all fried within a year.

+1...moveable subtitles is one of the primary reasons I went with an Oppo. Might not be a big deal for folks with a TV, but with a projector setup it is a godsend.

Not to mention the Oppo has every feature imagineable. The PS3 is the only unit that comes close to being able to offer what the Oppo BDP-83 does, and the Oppo is just as good or beats it in many categories. I love my PS3, but my vote has got to go to Oppo.

If you don't want/need streaming, then Oppo all the way. Great quality and fantastic customer service.

If you want streaming, I would say Sony or LG. Those are the 2 brands I'm familiar with that work well.

Multi region capability is the most important thing to me, and I got an Oppo because it was easy to mod, I was living in the US so I could get hold of one easily (normally living in the UK and pretty hard/expensive to get Oppo imported), and it will last me a while when I have a better setup.

I've had my Oppo BDP-80 for a couple of weeks now. The BDP-80 sells for like $289 from Oppo's site, and the BDP-83 is a bit pricier as it has wireless functionality built in. Bear in mind that neither the BDP-80 nor the BDP-83 ship as region free. You'll need a mod chip to get all-region playability, but there are several solder-free kits available out there. The chip is easy to install, and because it's solderless, if you have problems with the machine you can merely take it out to take advantage of your warranty. I had both my player and the chip within a week of ordering, and it took me a "minute" to really figure out the way the mod works, as the instructions mine shipped with were a bit vague when it came to switching regions. If you're within the US, obtaining one of Oppo's players shouldn't be a problem at all, and from what I recall Oppo does offer international shipping anyway. Then it's just a matter of deciding which mod you want to try out.

Oppo specifically the BD 83 I am sure the other Oppo's are as good as the BD 83 just I don't have any experience with the other ones.

I've had my Sony for nearly 2 years now. Not a problem, not a glitch. I update firmware whenever it is available via internet connection. It has played every disc I've fed it - and I have fed it many. I'm one satisfied customer.
