Boss battles in videogames can be done in different ways. I really like the biggest boss battle to come before the end of the game, and have a little bit of a "denouement" period to relax and enjoy some gameplay knowing I'm in the home stretch. It can't come too early, because I still like to be relishing my victory at the end of the game.
Some games have more than one boss, but for the purposes of the poll, let's use the biggest boss, or the last boss. How do you like yours? Oh, and the thread title should be a question, not an exclamation. Last edited by jsteinhauer; 08-07-2010 at 12:03 AM. |

I like a little "decompression time" after the huge boss. Rapid fire end bosses is really stressful to me...... I like to be able to savor the victory and enjoy the ending without thinking "Is there another boss lurking somewhere...."
Also, I hate final bosses that "break" the game. Ones that don't follow the rules of the game or where most of your cool items/attacks are worthless. I think the perfect final bosses should test your skills in the game and how you use the resources at hand, not spam the cheapest combo/spell/item you have or having the adjust to a new way of playing. |

"Beating the end guy to finish the game" is how it should be in my opinion. You can also replace "end guy" with any term that suits the game the most; e.g. "hardest track" (like in a racing game), "most challenging puzzle," and so on. I feel the hardest obstacle in the game should be what ends the game; it kind of gives a game a certain sense of closure for me.
The replay factor (for me, anyway) usually comes in the gameplay itself and rarely has much to do with "beating the last thing." Of course, having supplementary challenges always helps, like collecting all the coins, beating a level in under xx time... or whatever. Cool idea for a thread, by the way. I have never really given this topic much thought. |

I do think certain sequences like in Super Metroid escaping after beating the boss are absolutely awesome!
For bosses, really depends on the game. They don't always have to be at the end but usually seems fitting in most games to fight them at the end. It isn't always about size either, can be an epic battle scenario (tons of enemies, extreme challenge). |
