Universal Studios The 'Burbs (Series Remake from Seth MacFarlane)

Quote:
Peacock has given a straight-to-series order to The ‘Burbs, a contemporary series adaptation of the 1989 Universal Pictures horror-comedy film of the same name. Celeste Hughey (Palm Royale, Dead to Me) is writing and executive producing the mystery comedy series which will star Keke Palmer (Nope, Password), also an executive producer on the project from UCP, a division of Universal Studio Group.

Seth MacFarlane (Ted), Erica Huggins and Aimee Carlson executive produce for Fuzzy Door under the company’s UCP overall deal alongside Brian Grazer, Kristen Zolner and Natalie Berkus for Imagine Entertainment, which produced the 1989 movie. Dana Olsen, the writer of the film directed by Joe Dante, will serve as co-executive producer on the series.

Set in present-day suburbia, The ‘Burbs follows a young couple — with Palmer playing the wife — returning to the husband’s childhood home. Their world is upended when new neighbors move in next door, bringing old secrets of the cul-de-sac to light, and new deadly threats shatter the illusion of their quiet little neighborhood.

The series will film in Los Angeles at the same location as the original 1989 film, the backlot of Universal Studios Hollywood.

The film, which stars Tom Hanks and Carrie Fisher as the couple, along with Bruce Dern and Corey Feldman, has achieved a cult status after an inauspicious box-office start. It streams on Peacock.

This marks the latest Universal film title to be turned into a series for sibling streamer Peacock. The list includes MacFarlane’s Ted, which has been renewed for a second season.

The movie was just right - running time, tone, location, cast, Joe Dante as director, and a self-contained story that did not need a prequel/sequel. Turning it into a TV series is going to stretch that out into a different kind of thing and one that at the moment I have zero interest in.

If this results in a 4K release of the original, so be it (no plans to watch).

Yea, can't disagree with everyone else. The Burbs was a generic idea with perfect execution, and it's not that popular. Even in today's lazy, failing, legacy-tv environment, it's an odd I.P. to return to.

On the other hand, if they cast Chris Elliot to live above the Peterson's garage, I'd be trying out Peacock for the first time. (in Get a Life, Elliot played Chris Peterson, whose family lived in the same house on Colonial St).
