Default 50" Plasmas for $999?

Having not purchased a HDTV for a few years, I was just wondering what these would be like? Two people I spoke to both recently brought one. And one of them said the difference from say the dark knight & a few other titles dvd & blu wasn't that big.

looking for input.

What are you asking?

Are plasmas of at least 50" in size, priced under $1K good?

Or

Are Blu-ray's worth the upgrade over DVD?

Or

Do Blu-ray's look better/worse than their DVD counterparts on sub-$1K 50" Plasmas?

The answers:

Yes, you can get a good 50" plasma for under $1K, though it may be only 720p instead of 1080p.

Blu's are better than their dvd counterparts.(save for any bickering over extras that may not have been ported over)

See answer to question two.

There was a sale in our area on 720p 50" plasma TV's for $699 at Fred Meyer's a couple of months ago. I saw a guy buying one with a Blu-ray player and had the urge to ask him if he had another TV at home that displayed 1080p, but then I thought, "nah".

this one: Are plasmas of at least 50" in size, priced under $1K good?

Just thought it might be too cheap, it was 1080p too.

Panasonic 1080P 50' Plasma with free Panasonic Blu-ray Player for $999.99.

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....at214700050005

It was in Best Buy's ad this week so this deal most likely ends tomorrow on Saturday 7/10/10.

I love my 50' Panasonic Plasma but I have not seen this specific model in action.

My plasma is not 1080p, and it's a great tv. It won a shootout where all the other models were 1080p.

There are a lot of very good plasmas that you can get for less than $1K. Do you remember which model specifically it was that you had seen?

The Samsung PN50C550 is just $919 at BuyDig.com. I'm not as familiar with the Samsung Plasmas, as I am the Panasonics, but some members here like theirs very much.

The only way to be sure is to compare it side by side with other (hopefully quality) TV's, using a Blu-ray player and high picture quality movie as the source. It also depends on the intended use. My brother has a 50" plasma in his bedroom that he uses to watch the news at night before he goes to sleep. No need for anything fancy in that situation, or if it is for the kids, etc.
