Arrow Johnny Depp rumored to star in Doctor Who big-budget film

Quote:
Johnny Depp as a lizard with an identity crisis? That we can get behind. But Johnny Depp as a Time Lord ... that we're not so sure of.

And yet that's what we might be seeing on the big screen a few years from now if the info uncovered by tor.com is correct.

An article at pubarticles presented the project as fact and reportedly passed on the following news:

Long-time producer of the television series Russell T. Davies reported that the reason he moved on from the show was due to the opportunity to transform the Doctor to the big screen. "Bringing the Who franchise to the theaters is a regeneration for the character beyond the usual one. A theatrical release has a greater range and can reach millions of more people than just the fans. There will be brand new concepts and the film will be just as adventurous, scary and humorous as the television programme. But none of us working the film will forget what makes the character great and interesting and the long-time fans will not be disappointed because yes, the Daleks make an appearance."
We'd love to provide you with a link to the original article so you can check it out for yourself, but we can't, because it has since been taken down. Which by itself would lead us to believe that this is nothing more than one big, fat rumor.

But the trustworthy tor.com did some digging on its own, reaching out to studio sources who said that "the casting of Johnny Depp as the Doctor for a 2012 film is confirmed."

Even though we're not sure what to make of it all, we thought you'd want to know about it. But whether or not it's true, would you be ready for a Johnny Depp Doctor Who?

I'm not sure how well Doctor Who would translate to a 2 hour feature film. I like the established series, and tossing in a new, seperate Doctor would just make things weird.

It'd be something I could actually watch though. 60 bucks for 13 episodes? No. Ordering BBC for an extra 30 a month? No.

How does Johnny Depp have so much time to do these movies?

He's what Leo DiCaprio was in the 90's:
When you're making up rumors, there's always ONE star in it...

(Watch, we'll get "Is Tim Burton directing? " in: 3...2... )

Really? Thought it was because the old-school core fans howled that he sent the new series down the toilet, but shows what I know.

I don't know if you know but they are on Netflix watch it now. It may not be the solution for you but it's the cheapest.

Watching the old Tom Baker and Patrick Troughton episodes on streaming Netflix for (comparatively) free? Possible.

He is being cosidered for Dr. Who? I heard he was also going to be in a theatrical version of Dark Shadows as Barnabas Collins, with Tim Burton at the helm. Hmmm it will be interesting to see which one gets off the ground first.

I've heard that the rumor got debunked already and the website it originated on took it down already. I'm an avid Doctor Who fan, and as cool as it would be, I don't think it would really work.

LMAO... at this rate, Johnny Depp will be attached to every film made from now until the end of time! Wouldn't THAT be awesome?

I'm going to make a film this summer in my back yard (which is a driveway by the way) and Johnny Depp is going to play a Jellyfish/Human/Leopard hybrid creature that poops marshmallows and make the neighbourhood children laugh and/or cry with his antics.

If however it is a stand alone movie (similar to the Peter Cushing movies of the 60's) then I would be less keen to fork over my cash to see it.

All in all I think Depp would make a magnificent Doctor!

This thread needs to be closed becasue the BBC has stated that there is no Doctor Who movie in the works and that it is all speculation - http://io9.com/5577555/the-bbc-says-...th-johnny-depp

Who here actually believes this story? There are so many obvious points that shout out that it is just a stupid rumour:-
  • Russell T Davies is no longer in charge of Doctor Who, Steven Moffat is.
  • A big Hollywood movie star starring in a small-ish British TV Show? That doesn't add up.
  • The so-called quote from RTD uses phrases like "thetrical release", that's a very bussinessman like phrase and someone as ordinary as RTD wouldn't say such a thing, especially if they're not movie-like person.
  • A Doctor Who film would be prouduced and distrbuted by BBC Films, because the BBC holds the rights, not some American studio and there is no mention of the BBC in that article.
  • It makes no mention of anything that is currently happening in Doctor Who, i.e. with Matt Smith and Karen Gillan, the list is endless...

This has been clearly written by someone who only knows the very basics of Doctor Who and anyone who believed any part of the story after they read the article should be ashamed of themselves for thinking such a thing could be true. Its just another nonsense rumour the media have started because its the sort of thing some fans would like.

Yeah this thread should be locked. This has been confirmed false the minute it ended up on the net. It was posted with a bunch of other fake Doctor Who news that has since been confirmed false.
