Default CNET: DIRECTV's 3D Almost Made Us Sick

The standard definition 3D Direct TV channels are disappointing to some people. At least the Blu-ray format has true high quality 1080P 3-D content (Only one title for purchase so far at retail. http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/3575/cloudy3d.html )

CNET: DIRECTV's 3D Almost Made Us Sick

"Our first experience watching n3D, DIRECTV's new, exclusive all-3D TV channel, was a mixed bag. At times we felt we needed an airline sickness bag," the review stated."

I doubt this. I think these reactions are exaggerated for effect. How do these people deal with reality? Isn't that in 3D?

Well I have heard more than just these guys complain that 3d can make people sick.

I am sure 3d is here to stay, but I doubt it will become the norm. At least until it becomes available without glasses on most channels and TV's

Major problem is that it is assumed that everybody has normal depth perception to begin with.

I assure you - they do not.

When working off that assumption, you will make people sick (often because of continued fighting in the brain), or they just flat-out won't see any depth (because of suppression of one of the eyes).

Depends on the kind of 3D system used.

Shouldn't there be full disclosure when a reviewer has the issues you describe, or at least an attempt at balanced reporting?

I watched some of the 3D content and some of it just isn't good and made me uncomfortable, honestly. I have to imagine these were 2D to 3D conversions...like the African Safari one. However, watching the Nascar race or soccer matches was a beautiful revelation. While the Nascar did go for some ridiculous "it's 3D! It's 3D!-type shots, it still showed how good it could be.

I just think some of the programming isn't very good.

Do you wear active shutter glasses and look at a screen to make real life 3D? If not, there's a major, MAJOR difference between real life and watching something in "3D" on TV.

Sure, reality is in 3D, but it's also not flickering a couple hundred times a second. Our peripheral vision is particularly sensitive to motion and even at the speed the glasses shutter, our vision picks up a bit of that flicker. Also, when you look at something in real life, your eyes actually focus on whatever you're seeing. With 3D, your eyes are focused on the screen the whole time, but your brain thinks they're focusing at some other depth. This disparity adds to the fatigue.

At Best Buy the other night I took at look at some piece of programming on DirecTV 3D (some CGI dinosaur program) on a Samsung UN55C7000 (which otherwise looks great) and it was pretty awful. It looked remarkably lo-res, everything seemed flickery and insubstantial and it was actually painful to watch.
