Predator Appreciation Thread

With the Predator reboot around the corner, I decided to watch the original Predator Saturday night on Blu-ray.


It had been years since I've seen this flick, and amazingly, it holds up well, although not spectacular on blu ray. Predator is just perfection in the action genre. Has there ever been such a testerone fueled movie before? The whole cast is practically beefcake, Carl Weathers, Arnold, Ventura, and of course, Sonny Landham.

For a movie over 20 years, I just marvel at how the special effects still look amazing. The jungle environment looks great, and I still loved the scene where a mud covered Arnold lets out a yell while toss the torch. The predator still looks real, not a mere guy in a suit.


Predator also stands as one of the truly original ideas to come out of Hollywood. Here you have a creature that kills without mercy, treating humans as mere trophies, a point driven home when we see the creature carefully polishing the skull of his prey.

I really miss action movies like this. In one scene, the guys just go nuts, unloading a full mini gun clip, grenade launcher and several ammo rounds into the jungle ripping it all up. Predator is just the ultimate guy guy's movie and feeds our desire to see things get blown up. Hopefully, it'll get a decent blu ray treatment someday.
