Did anyone ever figure out if this is the old Criterion master or the new 4k?
I have the 4k already but I'm curious what Paramount did here.

I imagine it’d be kind of hard to tell since they’re both 4K masters.

There's a clear difference between the two side by side, not just color timing but framing. If it looks like the Criterion (flatter color, slightly zoomed in) that means it's not the new master. Additionally, the new master has a couple snippets of restored dialogue that were missing.

With an import you can get it on 4K UHD, which is still not offered in the US.

It's the expense and picture quality I am wondering about. I read that the Criterion has a different look to it, and I want to know which side this newer Blu-ray falls on. Plus, my 4K TV doesn't have the best quality...

You can always compare the caps to see what looks best to you. Keep in mind the 4K caps are SDR, the StudioCanal disc has HDR.

Arguably Studio Canal's best UHD release.

Yes, that's the reason I would rather ask someone than to go by SDR caps.

I don't have a 4K system yet, so I bought the SC remastered BD release from Australia. When you work up an order during a sale at JB Hifi, you can get releases for under $10, even with shipping to the US. I did not pay much for it. You'd need to be region free for the BD though.

Edit: Just checked and I paid $7.50 USD for the Australia BD, brand new from JB.

I probably won't, but thank you for the advice.

I've heard the saturation is too high compared to the Criterion...?

It's not, it looks gorgeous. Naysayers don't know what they're talking about or have their systems weirdly calibrated.
While the Criterion is also from a 4k master the new one is a lot more refined and "there." It's totally spectacular.

It also has a few missing lines of audio restored so it's the most complete edition aside from being visually fabulous.

Plus, the Studio Canal UHD was encoded by the great David MacKenzie/Fidelity in Motion.

I thought it was one of his SC encodes but couldn't be sure without looking it up.

Looks gorgeous anyway.
