I currently have a 60" Sony Rear Projection XBR2 and I have the Sony DAV-FX900W home theater system. Today my PS3 came in from sonystyle and I have it set up to my TV through an HDMI cable. I also have the PS3 hooked up to the receiver with an optical cable. To be honest I don't know much about this stuff but can anyone tell me how to hook up the settings through my PS3 and or TV so that I will get the best possible picture and audio out of my setup. If someone has the same equipment that would be even better. I noticed there are to many setting for me to understand. Anyways I would greatly appreciate any help. Thanks!

The Sony DAV-FX900W has no HDMI input, one HDMI output, and one Component In. Without some external switching device you are limited to a single HD source that will have to occupy the Component inputs. Since your PS3 didn't come with a component cable and it is a custom connector on the PS3 side, you'll have to find one at a store that stocks PS3 accessories.
Page 31 in the DAV-FX900W Owners Manual is a good reference as a connection map. At the top left of that diagram where it says, "VCR, digital satellite receiver, or PS2, etc." shows how your PS3 will connect. Connect your TV using the HDMI output on the DAV-FX900W and turn your TV speakers off. For audio, a fiber cable connect looks like your best option. There are lots of threads describing how to set your PS3 audio settings for the best performance. It doesn't look like the DAV-FX900W supports direct PCM and there aren't a lot of decode options. If you have multiple HD sources, such as a HD-Cable tuner, HD-DVD player (ugh), or satellite receiver, you'll have to source an external switching device. I don't have experience with any of those models but I'm sure someone on these forums will. This should get things started. Please post your progress. |

to continue from CAB's response...
Audio set-up for the PS3. First you'll need to tell the PS3 to output audio via optical. Settings - Sound Settings - Audio Output Settings - Digital Out (Optical) then you need to output as a bitstream signal: Settings - BD/DVD Settings - BD Audio Output Format (Optical Digital) - Bitstream This is the ideal settings for your audio set-up. So run your HDMI cable directly to the TV, and an optical cable to the reciever and you should be good to go. Also, just in case, make sure 1080p/24Hz is turned off. Settings - BD/DVD Settings - BD 1080p 24 Hz Output (HDMI) - OFF ...And one more issue I know of is during CD playback...its set at 48kHz but should be set to 44.1kHz: Settings - Music Settings - Audio CD Output Frequency - 44.1kHz Enjoy your new PS3! |

First I really want to thank those that gave advice...I really appreciate it.
As for my setup I have 3 HDMI inputs for my tv. All three are currently being used (1 for the PS3, 1 for the Directv HD-DVR box and one for the DVD/receiver). From what I know, my receiver only has 1 optical input which I'm currently switching between the satellite box, PS3 and my Xbox 360. To be honest I really hate going behind the TV stand to change it. Is there anything on the market right now that could help me out. Also would it be best to hook up the xbox 360 component cables directly to the receiver instead of having them go directly to the TV? By doing this would it degrade the picture or sound in anyway? I'm just trying to come up with a solution to free me up from using one optical inputs for so many devices. Sorry to be a bother but everyone on here seems to have a lot more knowledge on this subject then me. Thanks. |

EDIT: Ok, I found something very cheap on Ebay, not sure how good it is, but is what you are asking for... DIGITAL AUDIO CABLE OPTICAL TOSLINK SELECTOR SWITCHER $12 dont know how well it works though? or HDTV COMPONENT VIDEO DIGITAL OPTICAL SELECTOR SWITCHER ($65) ...has component connections but you can use it just for optical audio. I would love to switch receivers but the speakers that came with the receiver I believe only work with the one that came in the box. The end of the speaker wires have some sort of clip and unfortunately I haven't found any other receiver that has that input. And the wireless rear speakers believe it or not work really good. I don't want to run wires along the floor or fish the wires through the wall because of this really special paint job I got for the walls. I will try and post pictures as soon as I can to show this.
I think its best if I go with the $65 one it seems to come with a remote so I guess I can switch inputs easier where as the one for $12, you would have to manually switch the inputs. Anyways still a great find. Thanks!!! |
