Default J.J. Abrams to produce Victorian era robot flick "Boilerplate"

J.J. Abrams to produce Victorian era robot flick "Boilerplate"

J.J. Abrams and his production company Bad Robot recently announced that they would produce a movie version of Boilerplate: History's Mechanical Marvel, Paul Guinan and Anina Bennett's 2009 graphic novel that follows the adventures of mankind's first robot.

Outlaw Productions' Deborah Newmyer, who brought Boilerplate to Bad Robot, will produce the project. Here's the description of the project from THR:

"Boilerplate" purports to tell the story of the world's first robot, who, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, fought alongside Teddy Roosevelt and Lawrence of Arabia, journeyed to the South Pole and was involved in the silent movie business before disappearing on the battlefields of World War I.

Guinan initially wrote Boilerplate as a graphic novel, but the character eventually gained popularity on his own website, where the author would post images of the old timey 'bot digitally added into historical photos. Guinan told Comic Book Resources last year:

The graphic novel fell through, but I pursued the web site and started adding to it. It started getting attention[...] It started to get strange when I started to get letters from people who were involved in robotics or history and asking me for more information.
