Default Looking to try some anime. Need suggestions.

I recently watched the Animatrix and it has me in the mood for anime. I'm fairly unfamiliar with it. I watched Cowboy Bebop as a kid but that's about it. Could I get some suggestions on what's good?

I'd recommend "Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood" and "Eden of the East". Oh and you can never go wrong with a Miyazaki film (i.e. "Howl's Moving Castle", "Spirited Away"). I'm not that into anime myself, but these I love.

I also recommend getting Netflix as they have a wide selection of anime for instant streaming. You can find the "Eden of the East" series (and its movie sequel), "Howl's Moving Castle" and the first three seasons of "FMA: Brotherhood" on there.

Oh, and maybe try some "Mushishi" in between. It's not really a series you can watch continuously without getting bored, but every once in a while I like to watch it because it has a slow, provocative pace and I love its themes of connecting with nature. It's very zen. All 26 episodes are on Netflix as well.

There's always Akira. THE anime movie. Wish they'd put out some more Miyazaki movies on blu, as well as Metropolis, one of my favorites.

Does it have to be on Blu?

I'm partial to quite a few of the Studio Ghiblis:

My Neighbour Totoro
Castle in the Sky
Grave of the Fireflies - It's something everyone should watch at least once. Warning, it's totally depressing.
Kiki's Delivery Service
Whisper of the Heart
Princess Mononoke
Spirited Away
The Cat Returns
Howl's Moving Castle
Tales from Earthsea
Only Yesterday

I wasn't a fan of Pom Poko, yet everyone seems to love that one. I also wasn't keen on Porco Rosso, Ponyo Ocean Waves, or My Neighbours the Yamadas. I liked Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, but it's not something I loved.

I haven't seen the two newest ones either. To be honest, I only got into the Studio Ghiblis during the summer, because I had been completely turned off of Anime by a hardcore Anime junkie. He tried to get me interested in it by showing Appleseed and a lot of hentai, and was quite disparaging towards the Ghiblis.

On blu try Ponyo or Dagonball Z Kai.
I still enjoy some of the "kiddie fare" stuff such as Pokemon and one of the first series, Astro Boy (the original from the 60's in black and white)

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone. I have blockbuster online and Netflix instant streaming. So far I have these lined up to watch:

Afro Samurai
Afro Samurai: Resurrection
Akira
Ghost in the Shell
Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind
Summer Wars
Fullmetal Alchemist Volume 1 the Curse
Eden of the East
Mushi-shi

Question: Should I watch Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood or the original Fullmetal Alchemist first?

It really depends what genre you are looking for.

Easily for me, One Piece is the best. It has a bit of everything in it. Overall the feeling of the series is fun for the most part but it does have moments of drama and boy are those moments oh so very well done. It is a long series and one you have to stick with, but the pay-off is great. If you want to give it a shot, head to this site to watch legally. (Just click Show Order and then dub or sub to make it easy on yourself.) This show is only available on DVD.

If you are looking for Blu-ray, FullMetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is a great series. It has more of a serious tone mixed with a little humor (albeit, sometime out-of-place).

Baccano is fantastic. It is a good show to watch in chunks because it is all over the place done very well. It has a huge main cast with their own individual perspective where it keeps changing focus and as it changes, it makes some things previously seen make more sense while mystery to things added to be answered by another. This is available on Blu-ray.

If you want mystery and suspense, Monster is a great show. It is good to watch the first episode without knowing anything. It is hard to describe without spoiling. DVD only for this one. Can also watch on Hulu.

If you just want a movie to watch... Look up anything done by Hayao Miyazaki, Satoshi Kon, or Mamoru Hosoda to start.

Also, post what genre you are looking for and it would be easier to come up with recommendations. I hope this helps.

Also, as far as FMA goes. The second half of the first series pretty much sucks. I would stick with Brotherhood.

Please say it doesn't have to be.
There's no good anime ON Blu at the moment, except for "Nausicaa". (And maybe Ponyo, if you're okay with preschool.)

Now, if you were asking about Instant Netflix, I'd go into another few paragraphs of how "xxxHolic" is one of the most addictive series known to man, rail some more about how the original "Sgt. Frog" is ten times funnier than that obnoxious Cartoon Network dub they stuck on it, go into history lessons of how an early generation of anime fans first got that way from the car chase in "The Castle of Cagliostro", and quote favorite lines from "The Slayers" that nobody would recognize.

No it DOES NOT have to be on blu-ray. I'm more than happy to watch dvds if it isn't out on blu-ray. As far as genre's go, I have no idea what sub-genres exist in anime so I can't really say what genre. I have only ever seen Cowboy Bebop and the Animatrix and I liked both. I just want to try a little bit of everything, and figure out what I like.

Edit: I gotta get in the bed. Going to see the doctor in the morning. I'll be back on later today. Keep the suggestions and help coming.

Oh, well, in that case, hunt down Nozomi/RightStuf's "Dirty Pair: the Original TV Series" on Amazon.

I definitely agree with either version of "Fullmetal Alchemist," the Miyazaki movies, "Ghost in the Shell," and "Akira" (the latter of which is my favorite anime film ). I would add:

"Berserk" (personal favorite of all time )
"Bleach"
"Death Note"
"Eden of the East"
"Elfen Lied" (very messed-up show)
"Escaflowne"
"FLCL" (quite a strange show)
"Gantz" (also very messed-up)
"Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex"
"Gunslinger Girl"
"Hellsing" and "Hellsing: Ultimate"
"Heroic Age"
"Iria: Zeiram the Animation"
"Neon Genesis Evangelion"
"Noir" (favorite of mine anyway, not sure how everybody else likes it)
"The Ninja Scroll" (movie primarily, but the series is not bad too)
"Outlaw Star"
"ROD: Read or Die" (OVA series; the full-length TV show is just alright)
"Samurai 7" (yep, a remake of "Seven Samurai")
"Samurai Champloo" (from the makers of "Cowboy Bebop," so you should love it)
"Spice and Wolf"
"Trinity Blood"
"Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust"
"Witch Hunter Robin"

I'm probably forgetting some, but this should be a good mix of stuff.

I've been eyeballing those "Dirty Pair" DVDs. I take it you'd recommend them as a blind-buy?

Well, there was a YouTube clip...

(And a handful sample of episodes are up at Nozomi's YouTube channel, for additional persuasion.)

Evangelion 1.11 and 2.22 are amazing. I did blind buys on both on BD and I don't regret it. It's perfect audio and video with a great story line. There should be two more coming up, since what happened was they took the anime series and made it into a four part movie.
I'm not on my main computer but I'll get more titles when I get home.

If you are in the US just get Netflix streaming for a month, about 90% of what's been suggested in this thread is on there for streaming in HD right now. 8 bucks and you can sample a TON of stuff.

Darkside Blues
A Wind Named Amnesia
Lupin III: The Secret of Mamo
Lupin III: Farewell to Nostradamus
