Default Halloween (1978) or The Shining (1980)

We are having this heated debate between these two films which by many are great classics and two of the greatest horror films ever made! Which one is superior or which one do u prefer? Got Em!!

What "Halooween"
[Show spoiler](Quick with your editing skills)

I haven't seen The Shining (heard great stuff on it though), I started watching Halloween today, it's excellently made and crafted, but it has dated heavily.

I'll check out The Shining as soon as possible, who knows, it might be the last horror movie I watch in my Media Production

Oh don't get me wrong, I have great respect for it, but seeing it for the first time today, it's unpredictablity of it has gone way down the drain (people having sex and drinking are the first ones to get killed, etc) it's great at creating tension, but some of the music (not faulting the theme) sounds so 70's. I'm not saying it's crap, I think it's great, but great for it's time. Halloween ushered in a whole new sub genre that people wouldn't believe didn't exsist intill the 80's, but that also lead to Halloween's down fall.

The Shining dated? I guess none have you have watched Halloween in awhile have you? That was a B flick in 1978 I can't imagine why it has a cult following nowadays. I saw that film at a drive in with my dad in the fall of 78 (I was 13) and laughed my arse off at how bad the acting was then......I tried to watch it again last year and it was even worse than I remembered. Hell it was worse than Nightmare on Elm Street and that was some pretty bad acting (see John Saxon).

The Shining a much better story, better score and much better acting. Next thing your going to say that Halloween was better than the Exorcist!!!

No offense taken, I completly agree, I can see it being way scarier back in 1979, like I said I have complete respect for it and I do enjoy it.

thats certainly true... but isnt that the definition of a movie being dated or not? if a movie ages well, it wouldnt be looked at as "aging badly" by newer generations.... kind of a stupid statement i guess lol

but The Shining imo has aged much better than Halloween

Voted for Halloween. Both are dated of course but Halloween has the better villain, music and all round scaryness.

i never liked the Shining to begin with it just never drew my attention and i found myself even bored at times.... people will agrue that movies from the 80s and 90s are dated,, i look at it as if the movie is enjoyable i dont care what year it was made.. so of my favorite older movies- Halloween, The Thing, Godfather 1 & 2 even Jaws was made in 75 and that movie still is an extremely powerful horror movie and up there with Halloween.. just some examples

i wasn't even born in 79.. i was born in 84.. i was actually more scared of E.T. when i was a child.. then anything.. i probably didnt see halloween until i was 11 or 12 and it was very scary.. and Night of the Living Dead (at the time, now its laughable, cant say the same for Halloween- it was creeps me out)

yea i agree....if its a good movie, its a good movie.... regardless of when it was made... i just never thoguht Halloween was anything special, even as a little kid it didnt scare me or anything...

The Shining has sentimental value for myself too and just played a bigger role in my life than Halloween did
