Lightbulb [PS Move] Sorcery

The Workshop / SCEA

PlayStation brings the world of magic and wizardry to life with Sorcery, the newest addition to the PlayStation Move motion controller software line-up.

The Nightmare Queen has broken the ancient pact with mankind and threatens to cover the land in eternal night. As a young sorcerer’s apprentice, it is up to the player to master the arcane arts and fight back the Queen’s foul minions. Sorcery puts the power in the players’ hands using the PlayStation Move motion controller and letting them conjure and command powerful magic as they brave the deep dark world of the Faerie Kingdoms.

KEY FEATURES
  • A Real Magic World – Use the PlayStation Move motion controller as your magic wand. Cast extraordinary magic spells, brew enchanted elixirs, solve ingenious puzzles, and defeat the forces of darkness!
  • Unique Combo System – The gesture-based casting system lets you chain together basic spells into powerful combos. Freeze and shatter your enemies, electrocute them with lightning called down from the heavens, or incinerate them in a lethal firestorm!
  • Develop Your Character – Collect magic items, learn new spells, and concoct upgrade potions, to turn your humble apprentice into an unstoppable magic force!
  • A Lusth and Varied World – Explore five unique realms, each with their own enemies and challenges. Descend into the kingdom of the dead to battle the Banshee and the Restless Dead warriors, venture into the endless stair where vicious bogies are wreaking havoc, brave the faerie forest, raid the Slumbering Palace to free Lord Fey, the Faerie King, and much more!

The Workshop assisted by Santa Monica Studio.

Quote:
The Workshop is a gathering of experienced industry vets intent on making games in a new way.

Our Founders
Peter Akemann: President
Christian Busic: Chief Creative Officer
Chris Busse: General Manager
Charles Tolman: Chief Technical Officer

With nearly 60 years of game development between them, our founders went on to attract a core of talented, experienced professionals around which to build our creative team.

We believe that the massive teams of the current generation of games sap creativity and ability to deliver quality games on time and on budget. More time is spent managing personnel and communication than is spent on developing great gameplay.

Engaging top quality co-development partners at the appropriate time will allow The Workshop to maintain a tight-knit creative team that can spend more of their time concentrating on delivering world-class gameplay.

We're ready to change how games are made; we believe others will be excited to join us in this endeavor.

Its nice so see that they are assisted by a great team!

If this game comes out any good that might be the one game that makes me buy a move controler!

Sounds like the game will look different.

Finally, it’s worth noting that this is a tech demo… not an actual level from the game. As such, there were plenty of graphical glitches, camera problems and a cutesy art-style that’s apparently not representative of the finished product. The finished affair will be a much tighter affair that’ll last around 8 hours, with optional subquests bulking it out to around 10. In case you’re interested, it’ll be singleplayer only and will absolutely not support 3D at launch.

Even at this incredibly early stage, the fact is that Sorcery works. Considering my fairly negative and cynical view of motion control as a whole, I was genuinely surprised at how natural it felt… and with this impressive tech framework, there’s real potential for it to become something very special indeed. We’ll be keeping a close eye on this one.

So, onto the spellslinging. Starting out with the Arcane Bolt (a basic projectile-based attack), I flicked my wrist at the screen and was delighted to watch the magical bolt curve with the same spin that I’d put on it. A stronger flick creates a more powerful attack that goes a lot further, and I was able to easily pick off some distant enemies at the other end of a long hallway. The developer assured me that a targeting system provided “stickiness” rather than actual autoaim- and made aiming feel intuitive without becoming patronisingly simple. When a mob of goblins attacked me I was told to hold the trigger, hold the ‘wand’ aloft and smash it downward; and doing so created a massive radial shockwave that decimated my hapless opponents. Awesome.

Good to know 'cause the level design looks a bit like a wii game. So I guess we wont see that game launch soon?

Sorcery's still in development.

@yosp do Sorcery still exist? It was one of your best games last E3 and nothing was said about it during yesterday's conference.

I was wondering about this. No one mentioned it at all during E3, which seemed weird. Especially since it was supposed to be out this year.

Default PlayStation Move game Sorcery still alive

The promising Move-enabled action adventure Sony showed off at E3 in 2010 is set to be unveiled, once again, to press next month, Sony told IGN.

"Yes, Sorcery is still in development," Sony's Eric Levine said. "We're very excited to show everyone how this PlayStation Move exclusive game is coming along."

There was concern the game had been canned after it failed to turn up at E3 this year. Nothing has been said of The Workshop's game since February, when the developer noted work on the game was "in full swing".

Eurogamer's Keza MacDonald came away relatively impressed when she saw the game in action last year.

"Sorcery is only slightly more than a concept demo at the moment, but it's clearly got the potential to be a more creative and accessible wizardry game than anything the Harry Potter licence has offered up so far. It's also evidence of that Move is squaring up strongly to face the competition," read her Sorcery preview.
